Aberdeen 1-3 Celtic: Its Miller Time & Strachan Sees Red

By: JT | August 19th, 2007

donati.jpgFrustratingly, the pub where I watch matches when I’m in Philadelphia was not showing the Celtic match today. Gaelic sports trumped the Bhoys on this Sunday, so I was out of luck and have to be content with seeing the highlights of the 3-1 victory at Aberdeen on Sky later on this evening. But thanks to the wonders of the internet, I get to read about the match and talk about it like I watched it.

Wee Gordon Strachan chose not to follow my advice in sitting some of the players who performed so manfully Wednesday in Moscow. Artur Boruc returned in net, Gary Caldwell was in for JFK, and Aiden McGeady was back in the team. Other than those three changes, the team was the same as against Spartak. Early on, it looked like WGS might regret that decision.

As Ian pointed out on the Scotland Offside, Aberdeen dominated the early portions of the match. An opener that was well deserved came by way of Craig Brewster, after McGeady was stripped of the ball.

Celtic awoke from their slumber with a bang when Nakamura smashed the underside of the crossbar with a free kick around the hour mark. Massimo Donati leveled the match with a fine strike a few minutes later, his first competitive goal for the club.

Kenny Miller came on for Scott McDonald with 15 minutes to play, and WGS’ move paid huge dividends. Miller put the Hoops ahead by way of Mark Wilson, Naka, and Donati, and then finished the Dons off with a sweet 30 yard curler.

The news coming from this game will revolve around WGS getting sent to to the stands after Miller’s first goal. The ginger one chose not to speak with the media after the match, but the awesome Tommy Burns stepped to the mike to explain the situation. Apparently a steward accused assistant manager Garry Pendrey of firing a double middle finger salute to the Aberdeen supporters after taking stick all day once Celtic took the lead. WGS stepped in to call the steward’s bluff, and hilarity ensued.

The highlights:

Brewster’s goal was precisely why I wanted Boruc between the posts today. He looked like he’s been away from the pitch for too long on that first goal. Now, he’ll be in excellent form for Hearts - and no excuses for Spartak with two league games under his belt.

The second goal was nice, but the third - sweeet!

Yeah Nick, once I read your comment on the preview I agreed that if fit Boruc needed to play. The overall continuity is getting there as well.

Because many of these guys have been around so long, people forget how young this team still is. Kinks need to be worked out but the sky is really the limit.
