Appiah, Frei, Makaay, & Some Reality
By: JT | June 13th, 2007As ever, Hoops fans are looking for that “WOW” signing. For Timdom, that means a player from a high-profile club, usually in a big league, and not on the obvious decline. We’re still waiting for it, and we are allowed to dream a bit, so here are some of the juiciest names that are floating around the internet:
The Stephen Appiah rumor lives on, but he looks to be getting a new contract from Fenerbahce.
Alexander Frei is interested if Borussia Dortmund are willing to part with him. The rumored price tag is £4 million, and if Darren Bent is worth £18 million, that’s one hell of a bargain!
Roy Makaay will likely be leaving Bayern Munich once Miroslav Klose, serial traitor, is in the fold for the upcoming season. PSV is interested, but long-time Celtic target Makaay is supposedly keen on joining up with fellow Dutchman JV of H at Celtic Park.
On to transfer news that actually has some basis in fact:
The biggest news so far during the summer for Celtic has been the destination of the club’s captain, Neil Lennon. I thought he had a chance to play some Premiership football, Sunderland seemed to make sense, but he ends up at Nottingham Forrest. We can’t expect that the veterans that leave Celtic all go to huge clubs like Henrik Larsson did when he went to Barcelona. And Lennon’s not a youngster moving “up” to the Premiership. But a one year deal at a League One club? Wow, that’s disappointing. No matter, best of luck to Lenny, he’ll always be remembered fondly.
Yo yo club West Bromwich Albion have been linked with a move for Celtic striker Craig Beattie. Since Celtic have been mentioned with moves for Kamara and Koumas, maybe something can be done here, although WBA have already rejected a hefty bid from Wigan for Koumas.
Celtic are still chasing after Kilmarnock’s young Scotland striker Stephen Naismith. Rangers have already had an “insulting bid” turned down, and now Killie is trying to hold on to him. I wonder if we’re really interested here, or just trying to piss off Rangers. On the other hand, the price tag may never be lower than it will be this summer, so why not add him to the squad and get rid of some of the malingerers?

Yeah, I was really disappointed to see Lennon go to Nottingham Forest. Not that Forest isn’t a great club, as League 1 goes, but Lennon could play very competitively in the Championship and at least in the lower half of the Prem. Who knows - maybe he’ll tear up L1 this year. I’d like seeing that.
