Aw Geeze, Not This Again!

By: Matt | September 14th, 2009

My calender says today is September 14th. Now, I know Celtic’s actions in this past transfer market were very controversial. Most people think they could have done more, but some are alright with the moves. No matter where you stand on that issue, I think everyone could agree that the transfer window is in fact over. August 31st came and went. Over. Fin. One of the strange things in the past transfer window, besides actually signing a new left back, is the lack of transfer rumors linking Robbie Keane and Celtic together. Sure, ‘arry showed an interest in both Aiden McGeady and Scott Brown, and the press noticed that ‘arry actually coaches now at Spurs, where Robbie Keane is currently contracted and tried to make the connection between the three, but Tony Mowbray came out pretty early and snuffed out any of those rumors. Nothing to see here, move along. But by God, are the press not already trying to get a head start on some Keane to Celtic rumors for January. The Daily Mirror is reporting that “Tottenham skipper Robbie Keane is a shock transfer target for Scottish giants Celtic – with a multi-million deal planned for the next window.”

According to the article, Celtic have “already started the ball rolling and would buy Keane and pick up his wages in one of the biggest coups of their illustrious history,” the first claim being vague enough to not be called out and the second statement also seems like hyperbole. The article cites that Keane might not have a role with Spurs, with Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch looking like being their first-choice striker pairing. They also, yet again, link Redknapp’s interest in Scott Brown with a possible move.

We’ve heard it all before. Keane’s a Celtic supporter, except when he signs big contracts with Liverpool, then it turns out he’s a Liverpool supporter. Celtic have the funds and are willing to spend (A statement that many Celtic supporters will politely disagree with). Color me skeptical that Robbie Keane ever comes to Celtic before the age of 32.

In other “I’ve seen this movie before” news, Celtic is looking to beat out Blackburn Rovers for the signature of Derry City superkid Darren McCauley. McCauley is the next biggest thing ever to come from the Candy Stripers since the last next biggest thing (i.e., McCourt, Patrick and McGinn, Niall). The 17-year-old would be available for a fee of around £250,000 with add-ons and while Blackburn have already had him on trial, Celtic are rumored to be the favorite to land the Irish midfielder.
