Belated Aberdeen Review
By: Matt | May 4th, 2009
I apologize for my absence lately, but I was busy with my last week of college finals and then my graduation yesterday. So yes, there is one more unemployed person now out there. If anyone has any openings for a Celtic mad blogger with a Political Science degree let me know. In between cramming for tests and dealing with family all while looking like an extra in Harry Potter, I was able to catch Celtic come back from being down a goal early to beat Aberdeen 3-1. After Chris Maguire was able to find a Charlie Mulgrew free kick and give the Sheep an early lead in the 22nd minute. Celtic got a little luck towards the end of the first half when the shepherd lost track of Andy Considine and this poor little lost sheep put the ball into his own net and Celtic and Aberdeen were even at half time. Into the second half, Celtic took control of the match. In the 70th minute, Scott McDonald fired a first time shot into the net to give the Bhoys the lead. McDonald put played the role of the vicious wolf in the sheep pasture (third sheep reference in an Aberdeen related post. A new record!) and put home Celtic’s third goal when he got a hold of Shunsuke Nakamura’s through ball and put a low drive into the net. Celtic would keep the spot in the top of the SPL with the win. Check out some highlights and my thoughts on the match after the jump.
-”The Wizard of Oz”, Scott McDonald notched his 50th goal with Celtic with his two goals against Aberdeen. While he’s been criticized for his training, or lack thereof, McDonald has seemingly become the Australian Pipo Inzagi. McDonald seems to constantly be battling the offsides line and always seems to find the ball in the right place. No matter where he wanted to go when he was with Motherwell, Skippy is with Celtic now and his fifty goals in two years is very impressive.
-After a poor game in his last effort, it was good to see Marc Crosas back on form last Saturday. Crosas was at the heart of most of the Celtic attack and began a beautiful attack by the Bhoys that culminated in Aiden McGeady putting a shot just past the post. It was good to see the “old” Crosas back.
-The turn around of Scott Brown has been nothing short of incredible. Brown looked, at best, like a lost chicken with an anger problem last year. However, he’s been incredible this year on both the attack and defending in the midfield. For his hard work, Brown has won the PFA Scotland Player of the Year. A much deserved honor, Brown was singing the praises of coach Gordon Strachan. Brown said, “The first season, I didn’t have the best season. But the manager knew what was going on and he helped me through that – and he’s been great with me since then.” It would be tough for anyone to play football dealing with the loss of their younger sister, but credit to Strachan for helping Brown get over this tough time and become the player he should be. I have given my fair share of criticism to Strachan over the years, but there is a laundry list of Celtic players singing the praises of Strachan. It seems that Strachan is a great player manager, it is just the tactics he struggles with. Which is why he’d be a great ass-man to a head coach somewhere.
