Bye Bye Bobo, Hello Sami and Young Matty
By: Matt | July 15th, 2008
After a seemingly slow transfer season, there were both comings and goings today for Celtic. First, Bobo Balde, perhaps one of the best names in football, was released today from Celtic. Bobo was a long time rock in the center of the Celtic defense, including during the 2003 UEFA Cup Finals run. The Guiniean international was also a part of 5 League titles, 3 Scottish Cups, and a League Cup in his time, but injuries so Bobo sidelined for long periods of time and he was never able to regain his spot permanently in the first team. It is thought that Birmingham are interested in Bobo’s services and this blog certainly hope that Bobo finds work somewhere, and we definitely wish him the best! Of course there were finally some people putting their name to paper for Celtic.
As this blog reported, Georgios Samaras has officially signed a permanent deal with Celtic for £1 million initially and another £1 million if Samaras makes a certain amount of appearances. As I said, £2 million for Samaras, a former leading scorer in the Dutch League, is just a great bit of business. If Sami can have a whole season like he did last year, than this deal will be well worth it.
In a move for the future, Celtic have also signed young defender Matty Hughes. Despite being only 16 years old, Hughes was a large part of Rochdale’s youth and reserve team, even while still doing his algebra homework. For Hughes, a fee and a trip to Spotland for a friendly on a “mutually convenient date” was all that was needed. This seems to be another great bit of business as it was rumored Hughes chose Celtic over Liverpool and Man U. This could be just speculation, but usually when the scouts of those two teams say to buy then there is usually a good player behind it.

What do you think about V of H’s future with Samaras now with us for good?

John-I think Big Jan isn’t going anywhere this year. I think all three will get playing time this year with Skippy being a fixture. Whoever trains better, JVOH or Sami, will get into the starting XI. It’s a nice luxury to have both Samaras and JVOH, especially with Samaras so cheap. All three will push each other in training because they know if they falter then they will be on the bench. I certainly don’t think they would ever sell a twenty goal scorer in JVOH unless it was a tasty price.
