Caldwell signs extension
By: Matt | October 23rd, 2008
I’ll be honest, up until about April of last season, Gary Caldwell was not a very good defender. For many on the Tim-ernet, including me, Caldwell was an easy source for abuse and received lots of it. However, something happened…Caldwell tried to choke the hun out of Davide Weir. For this Caldwell received a two match ban, but when he came back he was hardly the same Gary “Heid” Caldwell. Some good performances by himself and the rest of the backline helped to buoyed Celtic to the title. Despite this, the call all over the Tim-ernet was to find a suitable centerback to most likely replace Caldwell. Yet with the Gabriel Tamas and his 12 agents debacle, Caldwell remained in the starting line up in the beginning of the season, with the uneasy proposition of his contract expiring in the summer. Yet “Heid” continued to play well, perhaps highlighted by the fact that Captain Stephen McManus was not playing well. Throughout this season, besides Georgios Samaras, Caldwell has been the best player for Celtic. Today he was rewarded with what I am officially dubbing “The Caldwell Extension”.
There is no doubt that Caldwell has earned the extension this season with his great play, and some have said Caldwell should take the armband for Celtic. However, Caldwell has only received a one year extension through 2010. To say that Heid’s play has been sporadic would be putting it nicely, thus Celtic is not taking a big risk by only signing him through next season. If Caldwell turns cold again, well Celtic only has a year with him on the books. If he continues his hot streak, then Celtic has a quality proven defender for a fair price.

An all right move, but I think Caldwell has righted the ship and we should have signed him longer…

The Caldwell Extension is just to give us time to get him on a longer deal. We have activated a clause that gives us a further year on the same terms but I fully expect another annoucment soon saying he is on Hesslelink wages.
Him and Robson were the main reason we won the league last season. He is the best defender at the club and I would say the best defender in Scotland.
Best thing is…he is a BIG BIG Tim.
It hurts him as much as it hurts you,
