Caley Thistle 3-2 Celtic: Giant Killers
By: JT | December 17th, 2007Celtic crashed to defeat yesterday at Caledonian Stadium to a red-hot and determined Inverness Caledonian Thistle. The match report is best left to The Offside’s own Ian Rose, a lifelong Caley Thistle fan. Needless to say, he’s happy man right about now.
As Ian might say, its victories like this that give everyone else in the SPL hope that the domination of the Old Firm can be cracked. When Celtic come to town and take a 2-0 lead within the first half-hour of the match, most teams crumble and are content to merely limit the damage and embarrassment, happy to wait another week until they face a team that they can actually beat.
Not so with Caley on Sunday, who’ve now won four on the trot. Craig Brewster’s men fought back and grabbed a famous victory from under the Celts’ noses. They even managed to play with only ten men for the final twenty minutes or so.
An absurd penalty call which got Caley back into the match, some poor goalkeeping from ex-Caley Jag Mark Brown, the typical miscommunication between Celtic’s central defenders, some top-class saves from Caley’s Michael Fraser, and a team that simply wanted it more all contributed to a loss which keeps Celtic’s lead at the top of the league at two points, while Rangers have two games in hand.

MON THE CALEY.
It’s so rare we Caley fans get to do much celebrating, that I think I went and made myself sick with too much of it. Only Motherwell’s looked better in the past month, and I really hope Craig Brewster gets Manager of the Month for December, though McGhee deserves it as well. The penalty for Caley was a bit soft - I’ll grant you that - but so was the sending off against us. Terrible ref all around. Thanks for conceding that Caley deserved the win - too many embittered Bhoys around the various forums are trying to say this match was stolen from them, and WGS’ statements aren’t helping that any. From 11th to 7th in four matches … pretty sweet time for Caley.

As far as I’m concerned, if Celtic or Rangers come to your place and you beat them, you deserve it, no matter the circumstances. Its a hell of a feat.
People can moan all they like about ref’s decisions and all that, but the bottom line is Celtic should always win these matches. When they don’t its because they didn’t play well enough to win, or the other team didn’t allow them to stroll away with a win. Strachan acknowledged that the Bhoys played well, so that means to me that Caley played pretty damn well themselves, including holding out for the final twenty with only ten men.
