Celtic 1-Aberdeen 0: Abridged Illinois Version
By: Matt | April 20th, 2008
This weekend I was in the Land of Lincoln, Illinois, however it did not stop me from seeing Celtic defeat Aberdeen 1-0 on Saturday. The Bhoys were able to continue the momentum on Wednesday’s exciting derby victory and for the time being leapfrogged Rangers for first place in the league. (Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain…or in this case, the fact that the Huns now have 3 games in hand.) Georgios Samaras made his case for starting playing time by heading home home the first and only goal of the afternoon in the 56th minute. All in all, it was not the pretty play that was seen on Wednesday, but the result is all that counts. I’d rather take 3 ugly points than 1 or no 0 points from a pretty affair.
The first half was very frustrating and worrying to say the least. Lots of short passes and wasted opportunities. Like many times during the season, we seemed to want to give the ball to Aiden McGeady and say “Here, win it for us!” It’s a disease I like to call “LeBron James-itis”. If you are not familiar with the National Basketball Association or Cleveland, I apollogize for that metaphor. Anyways, later goal scorer Georgios Samaras seemed lost out there during the first half. Hero of the Rangers game, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, must have picked up an injury on Wednesday because he was not even on the bench Saturday. The first 45 was a squeamish one for Celtic fans and it seemed like Deja Vu all over again.
Honestly, the second half was not much better for Celtic. Samaras was able to get his head on a Barry Robson free kick, who put in another workman-like performance in midfield. Other than that, there was not much to get excited about with lots of bad passes throughout the park. Aberdeen nearly equalized a couple times, but the “bend, not break” mentality seemed to rule the day again. Along with Robson, young Paul Caddis put in a good performance and (as I suggested), he could be part of a possible solution in the back.
Celtic will now get a week to rest up and get people healthy for another “biggest game of the year” next Sunday against Rangers. Hopefully next Sunday we see the emphatic, purposeful Celtic and not the lackadaisical one seen today.
Keep the Faith!

Phew! Nice win, even if it wasn’t pretty. I think we need to stick with Robson/Hartley for the remainder of the season. We need to do some major house cleaning after the season in that area. You weren’t, by any chance, in the great city of Chicago for the game, were ya? Excellent football bars in my hometown.

John-I was not in Chicago this weekend, though it is a great town and I want to visit it again this summer. I was in Bloomington-Normal, watching the game on my computer. It seems that Robo and Hartley have developed a nice chemistry these past couple of games and I would like to see them together as well. I think Donati has lots of potential but there are too many cooks in the kitchen now and I think we could some decent money off of him. It will also be interesting to see what they do with Scott Brown. He has been struggling, but he is a natural wing player. I think they keep him but I don’t think they sell anyone else and he continues to be bogged down in the middle of the park.
Congrats to Aideninho for that award as well!
