Celtic 1-Dundee United 1-S.O.S
By: Matt | August 18th, 2008
Am I sending out a distress signal for Celtic after yesterday’s disappointing draw at Tannadice? Definitely not, it was only the second game of the season and as we saw last year, any disparity in the table can be made up by some timely victories against the team from across town. The “SOS” rather stands for “Sort (it) Out Strachan”. After a rather dull forty five minutes of football, Celtic came out of the second half attacking and creating chances. These chances resulted in Paul Hartley’s fine strike after a good run up of play and a fine pass by recently healthy Shunsuke Nakamura saw Celtic temporarily take the lead. However, history did not repeat itself this time as Dundee United super sub Francisco Sandaza equalized the game. United were furious a few moments earlier when Gary Caldwell slid into Roy O’Donovan in the box but the referee was not sympathetic. Dundee fans perhaps got a bit of poetic justice a few moments later when ref Charlie Richmond collided with Shunsuke Nakamura and was not able to continue through the rest of the match. Never the less, United were able to equalize with Francisco Sandaza capping a frantic half that ended the match with both teams only picking up a point. The match result meant that the Hamilton Accies currently sit atop the Scottish Premier League.
Once again, Celtic exhibited early season “rust”. There is not really any players that played exceptionally well, with perhaps the exception being Shunsuke Nakamura. Naka put in some beautiful crosses and did not seem to miss a step despite coming back from injury. Nakamura was subbed out in the 68th minute for the sick Barry Robson. Once again, despite looking lost and playing the wing of his weak foot, Gordon Strachan continues to put him there. The honeymoon is apparently over with Gary Caldwell, as both he and Captain Stephen McManus looked shaky at best at times, culminating in the Francisco Sandaza goal. Scott McDonald missed a chance to go ahead late in the game with a header that was four yards out wide. It was a very forgettable performance to say the least. The frustrating part is both the lack of different tactics that Gordon Strachan uses and the various players that continue to be played out of their natural position.
It was clear that is just was not Scott McDonald’s day. Everyone has off days and you cannot be too hard on a 30 goal scorer from the previous season. However, we spent 3 million on Georgios Samaras, yet he only gets a four minute run out, where he is not likely to change the game. Hopefully Strachan takes something from this game, because after two poor performances that quite frankly Celtic is lucky to take 4 points from, some changes would hopefully be seen.
TAL
(P.S. If anyone can fin a video of the ref getting hurt and post it here, you’d be in line for a karmic high five. C’mon, who doesn’t love seeing a ref, any ref, fall?

I actually thought Wilson did reasonably well at left back, and he should be penciled in there as a started until we can dump Naylor and purchase a replacement.
GS should use next weekend’s match with Falkirk to experiment with the new guys (Crossas, Samaras, Loovens.

I agree about Wilson Chris. He did well, but I think it is safe to say Andres Hinkel has been a real disappointment so far in his Celtic career. I’d love to see the changes you prescribed, but I feel like WGS is too hard-headed and stubborn to make these type of changes. Though those are supposed to be our big signings…

Any word on what the injuries are to Caldwell and Hartley that keep them from the Wednesday friendly with Northern Ireland? Or should I be using air-quotes … are they “injuries”? I didn’t see the Celtic match, so I can’t say whether Hartley harmed himself terribly in his excitement at getting a goal.

Both finished the 90 minutes on Sunday and as far as I know there isn’t anything wrong, but I know Barry Robson was sick enough to the point he couldn’t start so maybe the same bug is making its way through the lockeroom?

Or perhaps they caught the bug that seems to go around when international duties come calling?

Matt, Strachan’s stubborness inevitably plays a factor. Last season stretch drive MVP, Barry Robson, was inserted in the lineup only after the ineffective Scott Brown sat out due to injury.

Chris, While that is true, even a stubborn Strachan must have saw that he was the catalyst behind the improved play when he was in the middle. Now we are struggling when he is marooned on the wing, surely this is not a coincidence. Strachan’s stubbornness is a strange thing. He’s willing to put guys like Robo, Caldwell, and Caddis in positions other than their natural ones but won’t put them back when things are not working out.

Ian, I know Robo was sick before so who knows, I was just speculating, but honestly for a pretty meaningless friendly I am really not surprised if Celtic told them to take care of any bumps and bruises that might not keep them out of a SPL game but can affect their play. It seems like for the important games like qualifiers, Celtic players always answer the call.

We’ll have an argument sometime about meaningless friendlies for teams that only get together 6 times a year. The qualifiers are what matter more, though, that’s true - and I’ll be much more harsh toward any player/team that backs out of that, since Scotland has such a great shot at making WC 2010.

Some folks are already pushing the panic button just because we occasionally allowed a very improved Dundee Utd side to successfully penetrate our (weaker) right flank.
Fact is Hinkel was very poor on Sunday & is looking increasingly likely to be benched on Saturday against Falkirk. Loovens will start & I would predict Caddis too, with Hartley or Robson dropping to the bench.
What’s your call on this?Posted from

Where is Loovens going to play? He’s a center back, is he not? For him to start, GS would have to remove either Mick or Gary. But I agree Caddis should start ahead of Hinkel. If the pre-season is any indication, then this kid is in good form and boasts loads of talent.

Telbhoy-I think Caddis will start but at back for either Hinkel or LB. I don’t think that Loovens will get the start on Saturday, but another shaky performance in the back might change that next week, or perhaps GS might use *gasp* a sub?! We’ll see Naka-Brown-Robson-Aiden in the middle.

Chris-Yeah, Loovens plays in the middle but I think a combination of last week’s poor play by both Mick and Caldwell and the fans clammering to see the new signing will put the centerbacks on a short leash. Caddis was one of the best players of the preseason and should be given a chance at RB or right wing if Naka can’t play or needs subbed. Robson on the wing just looks lost.

Looks like we might not be seeing that many changes after all…http://www.celticfc.net/news/stories/news_190808143740.aspx
