Celtic and Sevilla to duke it out for Barca wunder-kid

By: Matt | July 28th, 2008

Celtic have been linked with 20 year old Barcelona midfielder Marc Crosas, but it seems will be competing for his services with Barca’s La Liga rival Sevilla. With the upheaval at Barca this season, the 20 year old Catalonian has been told by new coach Josep Guardiola that he will not be featured in the plans of the first team. The previous season Crosas was on loan at Lyon and appeared in eight games this past season. Apparently these 8 games were not enough to impress Barca and Crosas has been told he could seek a new home for more playing time. Both Sevilla and Celtic have expressed interest and will be vying for the young Catalonian’s services. Crosas is a product of the Barca youth program. He plays a holding, defensive midfield role and is compared with current Barca stalwart Xavi. Given the trouble that Massimo Donati has had replacing Neil Lennon and Paul Hartley and Scott Brown’s hot and cold performances, Marc Crosas might be just the answer for our midfield problems. *knocks on wood*

I have not seen him play, but I have heard that he has done well while on tour in Scotland. That could bode well if he joins Celtic in the SPL. Hopefully if we do snag him that he isn’t just all hype. Also, since I have heard Sno is not moving this year, I see it hard to find time in the first team midfield. I would hate for him to spend time on the bench and lose confidence. Personally, not knowing him, a move within La Liga would probably be most comfortable. Champions League could be more tempting than UEFA cup, but who knows. Youth would be nice as Hartley is no spring chicken.

I think both Sno and potentially Crosas would be favored over Donati. Brown and Hartley had such up and down seasons that it’d be good to have some depth, and as you said Hartley is starting to get up there in years. I don’t think Celtic would bring him in if they didn’t think he’d get first team time at first and I doubt he would come here unless he is given some guarantee. Hopefully Barca won’t sell to another La Liga team!

I agree that some fresh legs are needed to complement Hartley, who will be hard pressed to perform at a high level for the entire season. I am a big Hartley fan, but he’s going to need time off every so often.

@Chris-While Hartley is no Xavi, he’d be a good choice to perhaps groom this kid for being an SPL midfielder. Of course, Barca are saying they don’t want to give this kid away so we shall see…

Apparently this kid isn’t making the trip to the US with the rest of Barca.
