Celtic Answers the Call and Kljestan ups his price
By: Matt | January 25th, 2009
After a disappointing loss the week before against Aberdeen, Celtic got back to winning ways and extended their lead to four points over Rangers, after Aberdeen continued their assault on the teams of Glasgow by drawing Rangers Saturday. A Scott McDonald double and a goal from captain Stephen McManus was enough for Celtic to claim victory over Hibs 3-1. McDonald got the scoring started just three minutes into the match off of a Shunsuke Nakamura corner. Six minutes later Stephen McManus was able to put home a goal after another Naka corner. As a typical Celtic-Hibs, defensive optional party, Hibs got into the goal scoring party just seven minutes later when Rob Jones when he got his head on Gordon Strachan’s favorite former water boy, Derek Riordan. Both sides continued to play some attacking and attractive football, but could not find the net for some time. Aiden McGeady seemed to have earned himself a penalty in the second half when he was clipped in the box, but the referee seemed to ignore this clear penalty chance. Scott McDonald was able to ease Celtic supporters tensions in the 76th minute when he coolly placed Scott Brown’s low cross into the back of the net. Skippy’s two goals surely can be attributed to the return of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Skippy and Big Jan seemed to revive that magic that they had working last year, working off of each other well. Overall, it was a good win and it is was nice to keep more than a game’s worth of cushion between themselves and Rangers in the standings.
In the world of transfer comings and goings, an interesting rumor has popped out of the land of barcodes, apparently Newcastle are lining up a 4 million quid bid for centerback….Stephen McManus?! Err…apparently Newcastle really is out of ideas. There is buzz that Joe Kinnear has been asking about Mick’s skill level (who’s he been asking that makes him still interested?) and will be trying to make the deal at the beginning of the week. There is even chat about Newcastle throwing in another player to lessen the price. That player might be a left back….sweet fucking Jesus, I’ve heard enough. GET IT DONE, STRACHAN! The other player in question is 22 year old Spaniard Jose Enrique. Where do I sign?
In other transfer news, if Celtic were interested in Chivas USA and United States midfielder Sacha Kljestan, his agent would like them to be aware that his asking price has just went up. Kljestan not only netted his first senior team goal for the US National Team against Sweden last night, he added two others just for kicks. I can just picture MLS commissioner Don Garber after the final whistle last night calling Peter Lawwell and saying “You thought a million for Shalrie Joseph was pricey, you ain’t seen nothing yet!” Apparently, Celtic offered a three million US inflated dollar bid to MLS and Chivas as Kljestan returned back for the Sweden match (for those who are unaware, MLS technically owns all the players in the league and they “work” with teams when it comes to transfers of players to other leagues. I think it has something to do with the US Constitution. America, FUCK YEAH!). If the Garbes and the MLS ask for a higher price, I fully expect Lawwell and company to laugh in their face, send them videos of Aiden McGeady, and be on their way.

If i was Kljestan I’d tell the MLS to kindly go F*** themselves. Celtic are infinitely better than Chivas USA, and if he doesn’t push for a move then he’s an idiot. Not to mention that Playing at Celtic would only make him a better player.

While in theory that is true Drew, there’s a lot of factors going into it. Chivas/MLS might not like the price and Celtic have been cheapskates lately, so if they have a price in mind and Celtic wouldn’t be likely to look to negotiate. Celtic also have a plethora of midfielder at the moment. Kljestan isn’t guaranteed starting in the reserves, let alone the first team, though it might help he can play in the middle and the wings. Even then he still has Aiden McGeady, Shunsuke Nakamura, Scott Brown, and Barry Robson ahead of him in the first team, and a bunch of young talented midfielders in the wings waiting. Personally, I wouldn’t blame Kljestan if he wanted to wait for another offer, though I’d love an American with Celtic.

Would love to have Klejstan on board. Think he can match the physical presence needed for the SPL and be a attacking, offensive playmaker. Hopefully his price hasn’t gone up too much, but perhaps we do sell McManus for 4 mill we can use some of that money to poney up for this transfer.

Nice to hear an MLS view of the player. Is he better than Edu? Still, IMO I think it is still pricy for an area we are well covered and for a player that maybe wont defo improve that area.
New post on ma blog, BTW.

Kevin-I think he is definitely a better player than Edu, but he is also a different type of player. Both players seem to be able to fit into each team’s system or what the team is more known for. Edu is a holding midfielder while Kljestan is a attacking midfielder, but he also has a physical presence as well. I definitely rate him higher than the likes of McCourt and McGinn.

Wow, all the comments are about Kljestan! Nobody wants to talk about the fact that our 26 year old captain (who’s improved by leaps and bounds every year until this one) is on the block? 4 mil + a new leftback is quite a sum, but are we really ready to kick him to the door already? Personally, I don’t think so. Some of our worst performers last year are our best performers this year (ie Caldwell and S Brown). I think the rope should be quite a bit longer for a player like McManus who bleeds green and white.

I think O’Dea, Loovens, and Caldwell could fill in for him JT, and leftback is a much more pressing issue I believe. I wouldn’t say Mick “bleeds green and white” as an article came out this weekend talking about how he’s faced criticism this season and Mick said something a long the lines of “I don’t do this for the supporters, I do it for myself and my family.”

I will personally giftwrap Jose Enrique for you and drive him to the train station. He is, quite literally, the worst passer of the ball that I have ever seen.

Steve-Many Celtic fans will quite literally drive McManus to train station as well. You say Enrique is the worst passer ever, but riddle me this, have you seen Lee Naylor, because he could give anyone a run for their money in a bad pass contest.

Celtic won’t sell Mick.
