Celtic Helps Out Cork City
By: Matt | July 30th, 2009
Cork City FC of Ireland have found themselves in quite the predicament these days. The world wide financial crisis has hit football in the recent years. Easily the hardest hit by this have been the smaller clubs in leagues or smaller leagues as a whole. The rebels of Cork City would definitely fall into that category. The Rebels have been living dangerously, financially for some time now. Last year they faced administration, but only a cup run saw them survive. As the season in Ireland began, things looked even more bleak for Cork and last week it was announced that the club would have to fold because of debts owed. It seemed like curtains for the Rebels. Many people give Celtic a lot of grief for being too concerned about the bottom line and abandoning the principles of charity that saw the foundations of the club. However, Celtic are out to prove that this might not be the case. It has been announced that Celtic and Cork City will play a friendly to raise much needed funds for the Rebels. Cork said of the match, “In light of the circumstances in which the club finds themselves, this friendly match now confirms that we will have the ability to pay the outstanding balance owed to the Revenue. The club sincerely hope that common sense will prevail and the club will be given the opportunity to deliver on this.” If Cork are given the time from the creditors, this surely will help them in their financial troubles and they will be able to survive. Hopefully, it all works out. Details of the match, which will take place in either August or September, will be announced in the coming days.
