Celtic in South America & Holy Goalie Rumors
By: JT | June 14th, 2007Celtic are trying to build their profile in South America. This is the first I’ve heard of it, but its an interesting thought. Celtic have been known to play some exciting, flowing football at times in their illustrious history (large portions of the last two years excepted), so some South American class might just be attracted to Parkhead. I mean if Brazilians play in Russia, why not Glasgow?
In goalkeeping news, Norwich still want David Marshall, but know that will have to pay a fair rate. Boruc to Villa for £8 million? Or to Newcastle for Shay Given and £2 million? Riveting stuff. No one wants to see Boruc leave, but getting Given would soften the blow quite a bit.
Exciting Icelandic midfielder Teddy Bjarnason has signed for another three years. Teddy had a superb debut against Hibs at the end of last year, and he’ll be looking to get some first team action in the upcoming season.
Robbie Fowler wants to sign for Rangers. Please do. Even on a free, can they pay his wages?
Celtic host Kilmarnock to get the season rolling for the second straight year. Now it’s the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League. This is the last time I’ll ever type that.
William Smith has set the odds for the new SPL season, and Celtic are the favorites at 8/11. Rangers are at even money.

Fowler had an interesting contract with Liverpool. He was basically paid £10,000 per a game, i believe whether he actually played or was available for sub. I don’t think he would do that for any other club, but he isn’t exactly poor. I’m beginning to question the validity of this rumor, it just doesn’t make any sense for either side. Why would he want to go to the Rangers where basically few people would care when he could go to, let’s say Wolverhampton, where he’d be more appreciated and can actually make a difference?

Brian, as you mention, Fowler is in a financial position to do as he pleases. I’ve always been impressed with his business dealings. So if he really does love Rangers, he’ll do what he has to do to get the deal done. After re-reading that article I find it interesting that they focus more on wages and marketing than what he can contribute on the pitch.
Personally, I think he’s so far past his best that it doesn’t bother me one bit if he signs for Rangers. He’s really just a penalty taker and has no pace whatsoever.
