Celtic Shorts 07.22.07–Playing with Fire
By: JT | July 22nd, 2007
The Hoops finish up their US tour this afternoon with a match against Chicago Fire in their brand spankin’ new stadium, Toyota Park. It’ll be sexy beast Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s debut, but its unlikely that it’ll pack the punch of Beckham’s party in LA. Certainly the Bhoys will be looking to improve on their performance of Thursday night against the MLS All Stars, so I’m hoping we’ll get to see some enthusiasm from the first team. The crowd mix should be interesting with a solid Celtic Supporters Club in Chicago, and a big Mexican population in town thats psyched about Blanco’s arrival on the scene. Its live on FSC at 1600 est.
Bernard Mendy is an intriguing option for Celtic at right back, and he’s keen on the move from PSG. He’s a player that I liked when he we was at Bolton, and he’s still only 25. No matter what, more cover has to be brought in at the position, and if its a guy that can land in the first team consistently and produce, then all the better. This article doesn’t mention a price tag, but previous reports have suggested a fee of around £2m. That’s pretty good business from my angle.
This might be the typical summer Sunday gossip garbage, but Scotland on Sunday reports that the Celts are looking at free agent and former Barcelona player Santiago Ezquerro. We have quite a few strikers on the books at the moment, but upgrades are always welcome. He’s 30 and has suffered from a lack of playing time the last few years at Barça, so I’d prefer to have a look in training before bringing him on full time. My guess is that he’ll dig a return to Bilbao though.

I’m going to this game today. Should be a good one for Celtic.

I am waiting for the highlights on YouTube.
As for Mendy: I think it could be a good move. He won’t be a mainstay on the backline, but he could give some good options.
