Celtic Shorts 08.23.07–Midweek Internationals Suck

By: JT | August 23rd, 2007

strachan.jpgIts impossbile to measure the stupidity of mid-week international breaks at the tail end of August. As someone who is a fan of a club team, and no particluar national team, I equate it to preseason American football. Only bad things can happen, with very little possible on the positive side. It does give me time to take a breather from football as the best time of the sports calendar approaches.

Any road, two minor things did go quite well for Celts players this week. First, Nakamura didn’t travel back to Japan for the friendly against Cameroon. Muchas gracias. Second, Aiden McGeady put on a fine display as The Republic thrashed Denmark 4-0. Is he really sitting on the bench behind Lee Carsley and Stephen Ireland? Give me a break.

Misfiring striker Maciej Zurawski vows to fight for his place at Celtic Park as rumors abound that he may be heading back to Wisla Krakow or even to Olympique de Marseille. Its fairly obvious that he’s the #4 striker at the moment, and if WGS isn’t willing to play Derek Riordan or give youngster Cillian Sheridan a run, he’ll have to stick around for a bit longer.

I don’t use VitalFootball as a “source” often, but The Scottish Sun doesn’t seem to get the articles that I need online quick enough. And I love this one. Gravesen to Fulham for £1.5m. The fee is less than he cost from Real Madrid, but the wage relief would be massive. Do it. Please.

Celtic have no plans to make any big money signings before the transfer window slams shut. WGS says he doubts he has more than £4-5m to spend at the moment, despite the recent announcement of record profits. And he slams the transfer fees of Michael Chopra and Darren Bent, while somewhat slamming the players themselves, which ya gotta love.

WGS, the quote machine. He finally spoke out about this weekend’s incident at Aberdeen (top left) which could cost him a six match ban if his appeal against a pending four match ban is lost. He claims he didn’t say “dickie bird to any fan anywhere”. He has been formally charged for the incident, but the case against him looks awfully weak.

I’ve never lived in Scotland, or understood which media outlets are “anti-Celtic” or “pro-Celtic” for that matter, but this incident stinks of bias. After the match at Pittodrie this weekend, STV reported that Celtic was going to be subject to an SPL investigation into sectarian singing. As it turns out, it was one supporter, and he was turned in by a Celtic steward! Celtic are doing what they’re supposed to be doing, which is policing themselves, and this is the crap they get for it.

Oh yeah. A Rangers Offside now exists. I can smell the stench from here. Just kidding. A little.

    CELTIC 5…0 HEARTS !!!!

I can’t wait to see the highlights of that first goal - Naka’s shot deflecting off of Berra’s face.

    I guess we’re looking okay for Wednesday’s CL match-up.

    In other news…
Okay, £16 for Bent is a little … extravagant. But, I would LOVE to have seen the guy in the Hoops. I really don’t understand how he didn’t make the ‘06 World Cup squad for England. He’s terrific.

Chopra, though, is a bit of a different story.

About that “Rangers” report. Isn’t it great how they can’t even manage to get their report banner posted in the right-hand column yet?

And when they do, of course, they’ll be BELOW Celtic. :)
