Celtic Swipe Defender from Rangers?
By: Matt | August 14th, 2008
Wales Online is reporting that Celtic and Cardiff City have agreed on a £3 million deal for Dutch defender Glenn Loovens. It was thought that both Celtic and Rangers were bidding for Loovens services, with it basically being a race to see who offered Cardiff City’s desired price of £3 million first. Most believed that Rangers were trying to continue their selling ways by including Kris Boyd in the deal, but if these reports are to believed, then the blue side of Glasgow will have to look elsewhere. After hearing that Rangers were interested in Loovens, apparently Gordon Strachan and Co. met with Cardiff City for a day of negotiations and the recent friendly opponents came out of the meeting with an agreement. All that was needed was Loovens to sign off on the personal terms and reports are saying that he has done just that, so the former Dutch U21 Centerback is heading north of the border for some Champions League football. Loovens was a part of the Cardiff City side that defeated Bournemouth yesterday in the Carling Cup. Apparently Walter Smith is shocked at these events and the phrase “When it rains, it pours,” certainly seems applicable for the Rangers boss right now.
During his younger years, Loovens was apart of the Dutch National U21 team. He started off his career with hardware, being a part of the Feyenoord team that won the UEFA Cup in 2001. Overall, he made 27 appearances for the Dutch side from 2001 to 2005. In 2005, he went to Cardiff City on loan and eventually became an integral member of their defence from 2006 to 2008, making 99 appearances and scoring 3 goals, including being a key member of Cardiff City’s FA Cup finals team of last year. Cardiff City stand to make a sizable profit from this deal as they bought Loovens for just £250,000.

I read the same thing. Brilliant tactical move by Celtic.

Hello fellow champions. I heard a wee rumour that Loovens is equally adept at playing left back. Is this the case? He does look a quality signing. Helping his team to win the UEfA cup and reaching the finals of the FA cup, certainly gives him the type of big pressure game experience required in the Champions league.

Marky-I haven’t seen anything about him playing LB, but if he has a history of playing there, then there is a chance Strachan will put him there. We know he won’t replace McManus and Caldwell is playing really well of late, so it would seem that if he’s capable then he would play LB but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. He seems like an adequate player, but 3 million seems like a lot for a player in his last year of his contract.

Yeah, J. Everything seems to going well for the Green side of Glasgow now. Unrelated, but are you writing the Fenerbache offside page as well?

Doesn’t seem better than what we have. Hope I’m wrong though.

Matt. I know that 3 mil seems excessive but if we didn’t snap him up we would have been involved in a wages tug of war when his contract ran out.
I think GS will most likely play him in central defence with Caldwell taking up the defensive midfield position. There’s been talk of Shaun coming back, but Villa are waiting to get someone in before they sell him to us for 1.8 million.Posted from
