Celtic to sign American Keeper Cervi

By: Matt | September 23rd, 2008

Well, better late than never, I guess. I reported on June 7th that Celtic were very interested in American born keeper Dominic Cervi and it seems that the deal will finally come to fruition within 48 hours. The 6 ft. 6 in. American was on trial with Celtic last April and apparently caught their eye. When Celtic attempted to sign other American keepers Brad Guzan and Bill Hamid, the deals fell through because of work permit problems, but it seems that Cervi will be able to acquire an Italian passport to get a UK work permit. Cervi was originally drafted by the MLS squad the Chicago Fire, but knocked back there MLS rookie offer and spent the summer as a free agent. He has appeared in with the U23 US National Team at the Toulan Tournament and was on the US Squad in Beijing at the Olympics. It is expected that Cervi will compete with Marc Brown to be Artur Boruc’s back up, but it seems that Gordon Strachan sees Cervi as the Holy Goalie’s eventual successor.

Yo man, what’s your source for this? Any excuse to get more Celtic news on the American soccer blogs to put a dent in the Rangers-centric reporting would be appreciated.

Sentanta had reported Celtic being keen on signing him, but as of now I cannot reveal my source on him signing.

Finally, an American Bhoy! Seeing Edu and Beasley wearing light blue has been discomforting, to say the least.

Well, seeing as I am a Columbus Crew fan as well, I already had a slight disliking of Beasley (Fire) and Edu (TFC). Not to mention Beasley has been not so good for the USMNT lately…

Yeah, Dom does look a little frightening in this picture, but this glare can be used to his advantage.

If his chin collides with Gary Caldwells head on a cross.. Is that the immovable object vs the unstoppable force?

If we’re talking about bhoy’s looks, I don’t think Aiden would get a bird’s second glance at whatever hun dance club he always gets into trouble if he wasn’t a footballer haha

mmmmmmmm, unsure about that. Aiden has that sort of neddish look that single 17 year old mums from Easterhouse called Britney fall for. He wouldn’t be short of a lumber. Mind you, a one eyed elephantman wouldn’t have trouble getting a lumber in Easterhoose.
