Celtic v Porto?!

By: Matt | July 26th, 2008

I do not think that many Celtic supporters have the belief that during the UEFA Cup final, Porto’s…well…ease to fall let us say, cost Celtic the game. Raab Douglas and Bobo Balde are more realistic culprits, but Celtic supporters still hold a bit of a grudge against the Jose Mourinho led Porto team for their diving in the game. So it was a shock that Celtic announced a friendly match against Porto for their offseason. This match will be the fifth match in eight days, and with the team already playing sluggish football it could be a long match. Supporters are hoping that Gordon Strachan will put a more competitive team on the field after Thursday seeing lots of new faces and non-first team starters from last season, but much of these squad changes come down to injuries.

Coming to Portugal, Celtic had 24 members of the squad, but they are now down to 15 because of injuries. Many young faces like Paul McGowan and Paul Caddis are getting chances to impress Strachan, but some goal would be nice to impress him. Out of all the teams faced in Portugal so far, Porto is probably the best squad on paper, but then again Celtic should be the second best but as they say “That’s why they play the games.” I think it is time for Strachan to stop giving Bobo Balde a public tryout and put at least a backline that has a good chance of starting the regular season. Hopefully tonight will see a more competitive and entertaining match. The match starts at 5 PM (Eastern Standard Time).

That’s true Art, but I can’t imagine there isn’t some other similar profile team offering the same money that doesn’t have the history that we have with Porto. Oh well, while they might be filled with divers, at least it will make for better football hopefully!

I think what is lost in the Big Jan header is the absolute peach of a cross that Hartley played!
