Celtic’s Four Goal Outburst enough for first place

By: Matt | October 5th, 2008

Well, it is official. Celtic exploded for four goals yesterday against new SPL kids Hamilton to jump into first place in the SPL. Rangers played today, but lost to St. Mirren 1-0 at Love Street making Celtic and Ranger’s even on points. However, Celtic’s offensive outburst put the Bhoys ahead in goal differential by two goals. The match against Hamilton saw Gordon Strachan using a bit of experimentation, with Barry Robson starting at left back, Marc Crosas, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, and Scott McDonald all getting the nods for the starting XI. Things did not start out well for Celtic though, as during the first 60 seconds of the match Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink picked up an injury and was immediately replaced by September’s Player of the Month Georgios Samaras. The scoring started for Celtic early, as twenty five minutes in Aiden McGeady played a good cross to Shunsuke Nakamura who then fired it into the net. Only twelve minutes later Georgios Samaras added to his SPL goal scoring lead after Naka played a nice pass to the “Gorgeous Greek”.

With only a quarter of an hour remaining, Scott McDonald got in on the scoring party after initially losing the ball to the defender, McDonald regained the ball and put it away. In response to some claims that he might not be fit as he should be, McDonald’s goal celebration seemed to touch on that subject, as you can see at the top of the post…

Hamilton were given a chance to mount a comeback late in the match when Gary Caldwell seemed to bring down a Hamilton player in the box, but Artur Boruc showed why he has the nickname “The Holy Goalie” and not only saved the penalty but saved the second effort header as well. A final touch of brilliance was shown when Shaun Maloney took the ball on a magical run and got the ball to Aiden McGeady who blasted the shot past three Hamilton defenders and put it in for the final goal of the game.

Hamilton may have been on a cold streak coming into the game, but their initial results show that they can beat you if you do not take them seriously. It was good to see solid performances from Naka, The Holy Goalie, and Aiden among others as they are keys to the team and without them, they team will go nowhere. It was also nice to see Celtic put a good amount of goals against teams we are supposed to beat. As the SPL standings currently show, it will be a close race and it may come down to goal differential so scoring 4 goals against a Hamilton may be the key at the end of the season.

Fair play to Skippy. What a double save by the HG as well, eh?!

Not to stick up for the press, but Skippy has looked a bit slow in form this season compared to last. However, if he keeps scoring I’m sure all will be forgotten.

I agree that’s he’s not where he was last year, but that was because he was in another world last year and with Samaras and JVOH stepping up and fighting for playing time there was no way he’d score as many goals. I think that saying it is due to his training is ludicrous.

Having 3 strikers (4 if Maloney) instead of 1 as your source of goals is hardly something to be concerned about, even if Skippy’s stats suffer he’s clearly a welcome part of the team.

    How was Crosas?

Another solid performance from Crosas, Nolan. Controlled and distributed well and I can really see why they said he was the “next Xavi”. People have complained about the lack of money spent this summer, but Strachan, Lawwell and co. seem to have done alright so far with signing the leading goal scorer in the SPL currently and “the next Xavi”. Maybe Paddy McCourt might get a run out in the next CIS game as well…

McDonald will have a chance to further silence his critics as I heard that Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink tore a muscle near his man region and will be out for a few weeks.

OK Bhoys, things are looking good heading into the international break. Minus the JVoH injury, we see ourselves in first place and most of our players rounding into top form.

Yes, Lawwell and Strachan did well with the players they DID sign, but the crucial left back position needs to be addressed in the next transfer window.

Indeed Chris, comparing to the last time we had an international break(after the Rangers game) things are looking a lot better. Having the nice problem of too many strikers who can score and a midfield that is moving the ball around well.

I agree that a leftback is crucial, I am just afraid that we’ll be out of the CL and Lawwell will see our team good enough for the SPL and not address it. I hope I am wrong on all accounts.

    Hail! Hail!

Hav’nae written in a while, but I felt obliged to comment on the treatment of Shunseke Nakamura compared to everybody’s favorite over-rated Celt - Aiden McGeady.

We should not be enamored with Aiden’s “ability” to run, head-down, along the wing and loft in blind crosses.

There are things which Nakamura does, that Aiden McGeady will never be able to do, that contribute more directly to our success - and many do not appear in the stato:

Naka retains posession better than anyone on the pitch
Naka sees the field better than anyone on the pitch
Naka’s first touch is better than anyone on the pitch
Naka’s passes are better than anyone on the pitch

He is, unfortunatly, too small and too slow for European football. However, I seem to remember Aiden McGeady getting caught for pace by pretty much everybody in Champions League - as well as the Hamilton right-back this past week.

All the people who claim “Naka dissappears…” better review their hi-lite reels of Aiden on the “big night”.

Aiden McGeady is the king of fifteen blind crosses to the back post - eleven of which are not close to anyone and sail over. If you object, see Shawn Maloney’s mazy run through the Hamilton defence - WITH HIS HEAD UP! which is why he SAW and FOUND McGeady.

Should Aiden McGeady have completed the same run, he would have chipped the ball blindly to the back post because that is what he does in that spot.

Aiden’s cross to Nakamura was a blind cross, (check the film) to a wonderful spot. But it was, in fact, Nakamura’s sublime first touch off his chest - to his shooting side - and the subsequent half-volley roof job that handed Aiden McGeady an assist.

Shunseke Nakamura’s contribution to our successes is summed up in one moment:

Remeber the Samaras goal againt Livingston - that 40 yd burner? It was not the result of very nice Marc Crosas pass, but a Nakamura play just before.

Nakamura was pinned between an on rushing Livingston defender and the touchline. The ball was popped-up in the air - directly overhead and over Naka’s back. Nakamura looks to find Crosas and then deftly performs a cushioned left-foot volley - inch perfect - over the Livingston defender and onto Crosas’ foot.

There is NO OTHER CELT, which includes McGeady, who would have attempted that. They would have let the ball bounce, shielded the defender off and played for a throw-in. Or, “they” would have tried to take the ball down and then dribbled into coverage.

When Nakamura returns to Japan to finish out his playing days, we will NEVER replace him. Perhaps we will return to whacking the ball up to another John Hartson or hope another Henrik Larsson dedides to take less money in order to play at Paradise. I, for one, don’t think so.

Ryan M- bit harsh on Aiden but I completely agree aboot Naka. I said in the recent blog, click on ma user name, that I don’t understand why he has been made a scapegoat.

I think it is pretty clear to see how different this team is with a healthy Naka as opposed to a unhealthy one.

Naka’s greatness cannot be denied; he has his problems but is one of the biggest factors in the recent trophies, and it’s about more than freekicks.
