Coaching Update: Day 2
By: Matt | May 26th, 2009
Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has thrown his hat into the ring to become the new manager of Celtic. Bilic is one of the most touted coaching prospects in Europe, and my personal choice to be the next Celtic coach. It appears that Bilic seems to be interested in the Celtic spot as well, as he has had close friend former Celtic defender Rudi Vata submit Bilic’s resume to his former club and has already notified senior figures at Celtic of the interest. In an interview with Sportsmail, Vata said “He said he would love to be considered because he regards Celtic and Rangers as being amongst the top teams in Europe. He is a very clever and very enthusiastic coach and he speaks perfect English. My partner has also spoken with his brother, who looks after his affairs. Now we must wait to hear if Celtic are interested.” Bilic has spoken before about his regard for both Celtic and Rangers. Before Croatia’s friendly against Scotland at Hampden in March, Bilic said “Of course Scotland is maybe not the best league in the world. But they’ve got two clubs who are really huge. Any manager in the world who had Celtic or Rangers ask him for a meeting, they would walk to Glasgow. It is the same for any player in the world. Ask my players here, we have guys who play in really good teams in great leagues, far better than the Scottish league. But I’m sure they would definitely talk to those two clubs.” Tony Mowbray is another favorite for the job, but West Brom have said that it will take a £1million compensation for the remaining two years on his contract. Burnley’s Owen Coyle, Alan Curbishley and Mark McGhee have also been speculated to fill the vacant position.

Bilic would be a huge coup for Celtic. He’s done a great job with Croatia and it was only a matter of time before he tried out the club game. Good luck in getting him.

I’d agree Ian, and the best part is he seems really willing to come to Celtic. Hopefully the PLC go in that direction.

Not sure how I feel about a coach with 5 matches of interim club management. They don’t even appear on his CV.
International football is managing a series of one-offs. Managing a club season is much different – ask Rafa B.
I like him too, but with his international exposure, overt personality and intelligence (LLD and multi-lingual), I can’t see him staying more than a year or two – expecially if he is successful.

Ryan-I’d be happy with Bilic for two successful (i.e. at least a double) years and then him leaving and then maybe getting Moyes in between jobs. It doesn’t seem like many coaches stay beyond four years, outside the big four in England anyways.
In news, Burnley are putting up a fight to not lose Coyle. Have said they haven’t given him permission to talk to Celtic and offered him an extension. Rumors are that Coyle is looking to talk to Celtic though.
