Comings and Goings (with a focus on the former)

By: Matt | June 9th, 2008

Yesterday was a day of many possible exits from Celtic, today we see another name added to the laundry list of possible Celtic signings. Recently injured Borussia Dortmund and Swiss forward Alexander Frei has been pegged as a “target” for the Bhoys in Green and White. Frei’s Euro 2008 tournament came to a quick end when he tore ligaments in his knee in his own home town! Oy vei! Given that Frei won’t be playing for the Swiss in Euros and the Swiss’ chance of qualification were slim even with Frei’s schedule has cleared up and he wants Gordon Strachan to know he has lots of anytime minutes to use. “Apparently Celtic were in for me in 2004 and 2006, now they want me again in 2008. No-one has ever put an offer on the table. If they want me they can phone. Otherwise, I do not want to talk about it.” Puff Daddy says “Oh Alexander, you just gonna use up your anytime minutes? Is this anytime?” Frei’s recovery should take up to 6 weeks. Seeing as Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink has said “Nr” to moving from Glasgow, if Frei were to sign then the striker position would be a hotly contested one…Bad Boy…can’t stop won’t stop!…eh eh eh eh!

WGS has confirmed that the Celts are in for Frei on the BBC.

Personally, I think Frei is a superb all-around striker, but what does that mean for JVoH and Skippy? Frei is really a hybrid of the two (a poacher and excellent in the air), but Skippy just got a new contract and JVoH is going nowhere. Competition is good but these three would be tough to keep happy.

Maybe WGS wants to try out some 4-3-3 (finally!) w Aiden and Naka wide of Frei and some combo of midfielders behind them. We can dream right?

@JT-Also what about Samaras? Does the interest in Frei mean that we are off Samaras? I can’t imagine Frei would want to come to be 3rd or 4th choice and I certainly don’t want to pay the money that Frei wants for a guy on the bench!
