Fir Park to host the Water Polo Event for the 2010 Commonwealth Games
By: Matt | March 15th, 2008
Well, not really, but once again Celtic’s trip to Motherwell has brought the wrath of mother nature. The combination of Scottish Winter/Spring rains and two teams being the shite out of the Fir Park pitch has meant a laundry list of of cancellations for both Motherwell/Gretna. Now I know that Gretna’s recent troubles and filing for administration is certainly a detriment to the SPL and the Scottish game in general, but seeing as Gretna’s days are numbered, I hoped at least that it would mean that there would be less of these cancellations, but alas they still continue.
In the end it is the fan who suffers. At least the SPL called the game off a few hours before hand, instead of one hour before hand as was the case in January. You still have to think of the caravans of supporters buses coming from all of Scotland and Ireland as well arriving in Motherwell today only to be told to turn tail and head back. Their hard earned money spent on a trip that won’t be. I haven’t heard any accounts of the pitch other than the official press release but let’s hope it is actually waterlogged and not, as Scott Brown put it in January “better than pitches I played on in primary school”.
While the cancellations are annoying, as one commenter mentioned this would have been a busy stretch for the Bhoys. A little rest for Tuesday’s Cup Replay against Aberdeen is nice. The rescheduled Motherwell away match is now going to take place May 25th.
I also think this is an appropriate place to honor Phil O’Donnell.
R.I.P Phil and You’ll Never Walk Alone!
*EDIT/UPDATE*-Celtic and Motherwell have announced the two clubs will have a fund-raising match at Celtic Park in honor of Phil. THAT match will take place the 25th, the regular fixture has not be rescheduled. Info here: http://celticfc.net/news/stories/news_140308173231.aspx

The SPL and SFA are jokes. They need to completely replace their entire staff.

Even if they did that, they’d just bring a new generation of Orangemen!

The situation at Fir Park has been really sad all winter. At least today, the Motherwell chairman came out and said he’d accept playing home matches elsewhere for the rest of the season to avoid any more cancellations.

Matt,
Thanks for visiting Óculo Verde (green glass, i think). Want to wish all the luck for Celtic in the championship. Also want to ask if you can do me the favour to spread the word in Celtic forums (i already did this in TalkCeltic) and to your friends. rangers is for you the same thing as benfica is for the Sporting fans. So i know what you think about that ugly blue guys. We would really apreciate your support in rangers stadium.
Once more, thanks and good luck!

mpre27-Not sure that many Celtic supporters will be able to get into Ibrox as Rangers usually sell out the place, especially a UEFA cup tie. However, if you are going, you should bring an Irish Tri-color flag to really annoy the Rangers fans!
