Fox Hunting

As the deadline for players to be eligible for the Champions League qualifier approaches, word has come out that Celtic have brought Championship Left Back Daniel Fox to Celtic Park for a medical and to discuss financial terms. The highly-rated 23-year-old has shot to the top of Tony Mowbray’s wish-list, with the new Celtic boss a long-term admirer from back when he was at West Brom. Nottingham Forest, along with a number of Premier League clubs, were thought to be monitoring Fox’s situation but it is understood Celtic are the only club to have had an offer accepted. Radio Clyde has reported that he will be signed before the deadline, but we will wait for official confirmation. Fox was named in the PFA Championship team of the season last season while playing for Coventry City. Fox has also been capped on the English U21 team.
Update #1 Reports are that it took £3 million to Coventry City to talk to him.
Update #2 The Times are saying that the Danny Fox deal is signed, sealed, and delivered. The Times reported that “After a frantic day of activity, Mowbray last night completed the £1.5 million deal to make Danny Fox, 23, the Coventry City defender, his third signing for Celtic, in time for player to be eligible to face Dynamo Moscow in next week’s Champions League third qualifying round, first leg in Glasgow. Fox will make his debut against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in the Wembley Cup.” Welcome to Celtic, Danny Fox!
Update #3 Ok, so the deal might not 100% done, but it does not matter as there is a UEFA clause that allows Champions League clubs to sign one player 24 hours before the game. What it does mean is that there won’t be any more new signings besides Fox on the team for Dinamo Moscow.
Update #4 Deal done! Fox and Celtic agreed to a 4 and a half year deal for an “undisclosed fee”, guessed to be around 3 million quid. Fox will head to London to join the squad for the upcoming Wembley Cup against Al Ahly and Tottenham. The deadline for registering their squad for the third qualifying round of the Champions League passed on Wednesday but Celtic can get round that if they exercise the one wildcard option each club has for the competition.
Fox said of the move, “It’s all happened so fast but I’m delighted to be here,” the former England U21 star told the club website. This is a massive move for me. I couldn’t sleep on Thursday night because I was so eager to get down and meet the lads in London.”

This is the type of signing that Celtic should be after in this climate. A talented young player who’s not going to cost an arm and a leg, but will (hopefully) be a serviceable player for years to come. He could also be a good investment if it comes time for him to move onto bigger pastures. I’ve really been impressed with Mowbray’s moves so far.

You have got yourselfs a bargain there. Most City fans pissed of he has left. Lovely left foot, but not the fastest player. hard tackler and A1 free kick taker. Enjoy him
