Glasgow Celtic CHAMPIONS
By: Matt | April 28th, 2009Congratulations are in order for Willie McStay and his Celtic reserve side, as their 1-0 victory over the Rangers reserves today earned them their unprecedented eighth Reserve League crown in eight years. Celtic dominated the decider at Ibrox but neither side seemed willing to commit players forward in the first half hour, much like the first XI’s for both sides. Finally in the 70th minute, Ryan Conroy delivered a high cross to the back post that found Simon Ferry who’s first time strike put it past Rangers reserve keeper (haw haw) Alan McGregor. It would be the only goal the Bhoys needed and sent the large contingent of Celtic fans, who by most accounts out numbered the home side’s supporters two to one. There was talk that the reserve league would not continue next season, and McStay and his Bhoys would not have a chance at nine-in-a-row, but it was announced last Friday that both the SPL Reserve League and the U19 League will remain in place for next season in their current format. The U21 rule applied to first team squads will also remain in place for 2009/10. This requires three outfield U21 players named in matchday squads.
Congrats again to Willie McStay and his Bhoys! Hopefully it’s the first of two titles in the coming weeks!
TAL!

Seattle-Most accounts had him controlling the game and I saw someone say that he “was on another level than everyone else on the pitch.” The only negatives I saw about Paddy’s performance was that he held possession a bit too much.

Seattle-Found these comments from Willie McStay about Paddy:
“WILLIE McSTAY swears Paddy McCourt will be the new Lubo Moravcik – if he gets fit enough to play 90 minutes.McStay said: “Paddy is a real talent. What we have to do is work on his fitness. Once we get him closer to match fitness then something might give.
.
“At the moment I see him coming off the bench because he doesn’t have the capacity to play 90 minutes.
. The only thing lacking is stamina.
So why can’t a 25-year-old full-time pro last 90 minutes?McStay added: “He’s never had a constant run. He has an injury affecting the middle of his back and that can crop up again.
“In the close season he will have a programme specific to him so by August he could be a regular.”

Wullie McStay was on Celtic Tv and he said that Celtic may withdraw from the reserve league and other youth set up as it doesn’t push the players….
