Hail! Hail! The…Matt is here?

By: Matt | March 11th, 2008

Greeting fellow Celtic fans! My name is Matt and I am fortunate enough to be bringing you news on the Bhoys in Hoops! Before I tell you about myself, I would first like to thank JT for the job well done before me. There were not too many Celtic blogs that I read, but JT’s Celtic news and musings was always a must read for me. Good luck in the real world, mate! First cyber pint is on me! I’d also like to thank Daryl, Ian, Bob, and the entire Offsides crew for giving me the chance. Don’t be surprised that the Guardian is ranking The Offsides the 35th most powerful in the world. I believe every word of that! So congrats again!

Anyways, before we start this journey called “Three in a Row”, I think I should introduce myself a little.

I am a political science student at the University of Dayton.
My favorite Celtic players all time often change order, but currently stand as Henrik Larsson, Artur Boruc, Jinky, Aiden McGeady, Neil Lennon.

My favorite Celtic songs are Willie Maley, Soldiers Song, and the Holy Goalie
Going further on Neil Lennon, I use to have a love/annoyance relationship with him until he retired. I loved how he was the center of controversy and always stood up for what he believed in. The wee man always got under opposing fans skin, especially one mob in particular, who I don’t need to mention. Yet, at the end, his playing days were always….interesting to say the least. I’m glad the season ended the way I did with Neil going out with the double, so my last memory of him wasn’t him tripping over his own feet in the San Siro while Kaka ran past him with ease. The fact that there is a video on youtube of Neil in a bar singing “Oh the Rangers are shite!” just shows that Celtic is first and foremost in his heart. I’m all for bringing back Neil as coach/adviser role.

Some things that you can expect me to blog about.
Celtic team news and results
Transfer rumors
The atmosphere at Celtic park
WGS tactics
The eventual heart attack the current back line will give me
Pretty much anything Celtic related

That brings us to the two big letters that everyone who follows Scottish football has an opinion on. O and F. I personally hate the term, as I am tired of Celtic supporters being lumped in with a certain team. The two teams trips to Barcelona should show the difference. The one thing I will try to avoid is going political on you. Everyone has their opinions on certain matters that entangles itself around the “Old Firm”, including myself. But as I said, I am a political science major in school and hear enough of that stuff in class. Football should be a release, right?

On a final note, being from North America, I might switch the words “football” and “soccer” in and out. I apologize as it is what I am used to. With that, thanks for reading and enjoy the ride!

“And they gave us James McGrory and Paul McStay….”

Ah, a nice transition. I like it.

Best of luck, I’ll be by from time to time.

Make sure to mention on the blog if you’re going to be in the Philly area, and we can catch up for a match.

Officially now, welcome to the blog Matt. On the “OF” point, I agree with you to a certain extent. As a fan of a different side than the big two, I tend to fall into the trap of lumping them together more than I should, because believe me, I do have very different feelings about the two teams. As a national team fan, it’s also tempting to use “OF” instead of “Celtic and that other Glasgow side” because they so often make up, together, such a huge part of the national roster. You can’t be part of the oldest and fiercest rivalry in sport without picking up a collective nickname, but I’ll try to use it only when appropriate.

I’m going to chime in here, as another Southwest Ohio Scottish football following Matt. One who, for reasons still unclear, selected Hearts as the team to follow. Which brings its own unique set of frustrations.

All that aside, glad to see someone contributing. I mostly just lurk here.

John, I’ll try to did through the spam filter every now and again. When I use to comment, I would get flagged a lot as well so I will be checking them. But it does catch some actual spam. When looking through I saw some weird stuff haha, but I’ll try to dig out the real comments! Keep checking!

bustling, metropolitan Oxford - Home to Miami University!

Yeah, I’m really not certain why I selected Hearts. I didn’t really have any strong connections to Scottish football to begin with, until I stayed in Edinburgh for a few weeks. Then Vlad showed up and made things interesting.

Tyler, if you’re looking for a place around Philly to watch matches, check out Paddy Rooney’s in Havertown which shows every match unless it conflicts with the Gaelic Games. I think Fado at 15th & Locust is an option too, but show matches as consistently as Rooney’s
