Huns Unsurprisingly Full of It;Sky+ESPN TV Deal

By: Matt | July 16th, 2009

One of the biggest moonbeams in recent history were sent earlier in the week from Rangers Headquarters. We are talking “5 star casino attached to Ibrox” moonbeam big. While a Celtic owned TV station would have had positives, and negatives, it all seemed to be a figment of Sir Davie’s imagination. The SPL owners met today and it did not even take them a day to accept the £65m five-year deal with Sky and ESPN. The Celtic-Rangers owned SPL TV rights dream left just as fast as it came, it seems. The SPL’s 12 clubs, some of whom were facing severe financial problems without a TV deal, voted on the proposal at the league’s annual meeting at Hampden Park on Thursday. It is believed that the Old Firm’s proposal was not voted on at Thursday’s meeting. The new contract is worth a similar amount to Setanta’s original deal, £13m per year. Lex Gold said, “We are pleased that in just over three weeks we have been able to strike this deal. Sky and ESPN are two of the biggest names in sports broadcasting and they will bring first-class production standards and a wide audience to the table. We are looking forward to working with both in the coming years to raise the profile of the SPL for our clubs, fans and partners.” So with a TV deal done now, Rangers will have to focus on creating moon beams about David Trezeguet instead.

John Reid comment on the new deal: “Celtic have a responsibility to speak out for our supporters who will be deeply dissatisfied with the background to and outcome of today’s SPL decision and the events leading up to it.

“No-one should under-estimate the blow that has been inflicted on this club and Scottish football by the way in which the whole affair has been handled, and by the losses incurred.

“Last year’s decision to reject the Sky bid and opt for Setanta – arrived at against the strong opposition of Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen – has proved to be the disastrous misjudgement we indicated it might be, with Setanta now in administration.

“In turn, this has led to the dilemma we now find ourselves in. Today the SPL accepted a bid that is less than half the value of that offered by Sky last year. The whole SPL is now a commercial victim, in an uncompetitive TV market, in the middle of a recession, locked in for years to an income some 60% lower than last year’s bid.

“This is the direct consequence of last year’s misjudgement, one that has cost us all some £70million in a sport that desperately needs the income and where our supporters are already paying their own hard-earned cash.

“To Celtic it means a potential loss of up to £12million over the four-year period – the equivalent of around 6,500 season tickets each year.

“We need to face up to some harsh realities. In an environment crying out for long-term thinking, this concentration on short-term gain only leads to long-term pain.

“Above all, the SPL must learn the lessons of these events. That is why we initiated discussion with Rangers Football Club to examine possible alternatives to the present position.

“We reserve the right to continue to explore those options not only for the longer term benefit of Celtic Football Club but for everyone involved.”

Ok, firstly the casino thing was took out of Rangers hands so your havering there, secondly the Rangers TV deal was a joint venture with Celtic which both parties didn’t have the time to table a recognisable bid, therefore the clubs that voted against last year were going to do the same regardless so it wasn’t just a Murray moonbeam, it was a Lewell moonbeam too. And lastly no-one at Rangers have shown an interest in Trezeguet, the source of the interest came from a Channel 4 website that hasn’t been substantiated by anyone. Facts and Tims ,eh!

Successful fishing trip for Timmy.:) As far as Trezeguet, so you’re excited that selling your best player and former team captain are just so you don’t go into administration and not to buy another player? Well, that’s me told, eh?

Lex Gold’s response to Reid’s comments: “I have just seen the comments from John Reid, the Chairman of Celtic FC. For the record, everyone is disappointed with the demise of Setanta, no one more so than the SPL at the centre, and its clubs. Twelve months ago the Executive and the Board of the SPL brought forward two deals which, at the time, were both credible and strong. One from Sky and one from Setanta. At the time, the clubs approved the Setanta deal by majority. Had we delayed to the normal timetable for going to market we would have been in the middle of the biggest downturn the economy has seen in decades. The SPL is a democratic organisation and that process sparks debate and differing views. Lessons have been, and are being learned, but our clubs today agreed that there was little value in reheating past disagreements.”

Also, you do know that Hun is a sectarian name that has been banned by your club, but then again for someone so far away and obviously full of drivel you wouldn’t know that either. Here is a title that could also have been used but Rangers fans wouldn’t stoop so low.

Successful fishing? I don’t think anyone bought into the idea we were going for Trezeguet. And Ferguson being our best player? Since when? Administration? Wow you are retarded. But then again losing the league to a team that’s going into administration must hurt eh? Stick to facts before arguing a case.

You’re aware that you sold Bougherra as well right? You do know what a conjunction is, correct? The word “and”, a conjunction, is meant to separate and distinguish between words, but I guess that’s too advanced for you. Are those enough “facts” for you?

Bougherra’s still a Ranger, with a league medal to his name.

You must be hurting Matty Bhoy. Long may it continue.

i’ve been living away from scotland for 6 years now, but i read these sites almost daily.
i’ve also noticed vanguard bear’s comments each time i’ve been on here.
i’m sorry, but not surprised, to come to the conclusion that mr vanguard is in fact a complete TIT….

sorry, but it just had to be said.

“vanguard bear”? what kind of fool comes up with a name like that?
i took the time to check the oxford english dictionary in order to confirm my suspicions that mr bear is in fact a TIT.

    from the oxford english dictionary…

“Vanguard – The foremost position in an army or fleet advancing into battle”

    what battle? stupid little boy….

Alan-See, if a Hun would come on here with their bigoted sectarian pish, I can delete the shite and ban the user. VB at least has the decency to show his stupidity in football matters and not in that.

VB-”Loyal”-As opposed to Aiden McGeady (ROI international) and Artur Boruc’s 3 winners medals? We’ll add another this year to finish up Celtic dominance this decade.

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN HERE IS CELTIC AND RANGERS SHOULD NOT LET SKY/EPSN OPERATE INSIDE THEIT STADIUMS AND INSTEAD STREAM EVERY MATCH THEY PLAY IN THEIR OWN STADIUMS ON THEIR ON CHANNELL , AND WHEN THEY PLAY AWAY SURE SKY WILL PROBABLY BROADCAST IT ANYWAY BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BIGGEST ATTRACTION. WHEN THEY PLAY AWAY THEY SHOULD ASK FOR A SUM FOR EACH MATCH AS IT GOES. THAT WAY IT LEAVES MORE SKY/ESPN MONIES FOR THE SMALLER CLUBS WHILE WE HAVE OUR OWN BROADCASTING CHANNEL , AND THIS SHOULD ALSO BE THE VERY LAST PUSH WE NEED TO FORCE OURSELVES OUT OF THIS LEAGUE HOW THE HELL CAN U JUSTIFY SOMEONE FINISHING MIDDLE TABE OR LAST IN PREM LEAGUE WITH NO CUP RUN OR CHAMOPIONS LEAGUE RUNNING GETTIN MORE THAN BOTH THESE CLUBS? THERE IS NO WAY IT CAN BE JUSTIFIED!!!!!

Matt what dominance have you had this decade?

    League Champs: 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009
    Scottish Cup: 2000, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2009
    League Cup: 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007

So if Rangers have won all that, then please do tell me what you have dominated?

Alan the very fact you had to look up a word in the dictionary tells me more about you than I need to know. Matt, surely using your extensive knowledge of the English language you’d also know that the word ‘and’ is not only a conjunction but also a noun and an idiom, but hey everyday is a schoolday.

2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008…now, correct me if my math is wrong, but 6 (and 7 next year) is more than 4, no?

As far as your “english lesson”, you apparently were unaware that I was using it as a conjunction, since you were under the impression I thought Ferguhun was your best player.

Vanguard talks tosh, have you visited his website? they spout nothing but cock on there.
He is time travelling back to 1690 and rarely ever looks to the future. Sad thing is he doesnt even live in his beloved Great Britain. A sinister being with squint eyes and thick specks who normally wears a Parka whilst hanging around the boys toilets in central station prior to his infrequent visits to Ibrox. Yeah thats the Vanguard Bear. The Vanguard so you timmy better watch it.
