Lawwell: “Take our money, please!”
By: Matt | February 23rd, 2009
The Sunday Mail came out with an article yesterday where Peter Lawwell insisted that Celtic were not being cheap in the January transfer window, but rather that no one wanted to sell. Lawwell said, “We had targets and moved for them but for a variety of reasons it didn’t happen. As can be the case in January we found it to be a dead market but we will work hard again to strengthen in the summer.” So teams were not willing to accept Celtic’s money? Seems like a logical thing to do in these strong economic times where money and wealth floats freely and easily around the world. Oh wait, it is actually the opposite of that.
I would like to think that I have a decent understanding of how the business of modern football works. I know that the financial gulf is widening between the EPL and the rest of the world and those idiots down south paying double our wage bill for their backup keeper has increased the prices of all players, many that are not worthy of the large piles of cash they are receiving (I’M LOOKING AT YOU, ROBBIE KEANE!). I also am aware that there is a wee economic situation in the world that football is not immune to and that unless you are providing the automobile heroine to the US of A (where apparently people of Argentinian heritage are not allowed to comment of football), it is not wise to buy everything in sight. But as my metaphor spouting Grandfather would say, “Don’t piss on my shoes and say it is raining!” If times are tough and the better business plan would be to batten down the hatches, make good financial decisions, and try and buy players cheap for the future, then tell us that. Do not try and tell us that all of the sudden teams are just not accepting fair bids for their players that we want.

Tricky Dick-I agree. If he would just be upfront and say “We don’t want to spend, in case you haven’t noticed the economy has gone to the shitter and we’re in a decent economic spot now,” I’d be ok with it.

Hopefully this means that we will spend this summer. If we don’t win the league, they wouldn’t have an excuse not to!

The problem is the markets we shop in for 1st team players. Stop telling us we canny compete wie the EPL and shop in a market you can compete in.
It’s a poor short-term business plan.

Hail! Hail!
I just read an article regarding the lack of striking options at Celtic – due tothe loaning of three forwards.
In it, WGS bemoans not brigning in another striker before the window closed.
Is there something wrong with Hutchinson? (insert comments; jokes; laments; etc…)

Ryan-No, nothing physically wrong with Hutchinson. In fact, he is leading the reserve league in scoring. He has faced some injury problems earlier in the league, but by all accounts he is healthy now. Most people seem to think that Strachan is not a big fan of Hutchinson because Hutch complained about his lack of first team playing time earlier in the year and thus Strachan is keeping him on the bench because of it.

Absolute and utter tripe.
Though I believe what you are saying, it is exactly the reason to get WGS out.
The very scenario played out in Spain. Barcelona hit a wall under Rikaard at about four seasons. Barca spent big to “strengthen” the squad while Real Madrid won La Liga twice-on-the-trot. Rikaard went out and in comes the Reserve / Youth coach – with it reserve / youth players. Deco and Ronaldinho (with threats to Marquez and Eto’o) are shown the door and Barca our back on top.
Meanwhile, the Madridistas wonder, “where are our great youth players?”. Calderon / Mijatovic stammer, “Er, ah…loaned out all over the world.”
Madrid’s Reserve / Youth, Michel, resigns after speaking out about this policy.
If I were Ben 10, I’d be complaining, too. He came here with the intention of competing for spot:
1. VoH goes down
2. Chris Killen is out in the Yard
3. Sheridan and Killen get loaned
4. Samaras’ goals dry-up
5. McDonald racks up goals, but also international miles, then…
6. …Celtic goals dry-up
7. Ben 10 keeps scoring, and scoring, and scoringCircumstances have convened to offer a run-in-the-side. If the lad is healthy; you spent the money; team goals are gone; you’ve changed tactics, formations, personnel; His goals continue, the obvious thing to do is – FLY TO EGYPT?
STRACHAN MUST GO! STRACHAN MUST GO! STRACHAN MUST GO!
STRACHAN MUST GO! STRACHAN MUST GO! STRACHAN MUST GO!

Great points Ryan. I like you agree that GS has hit the wall but……while he has done things to annoy he has done nothing that is sackable.
If you sack a manager who has been a success then others look at the club as damaged and badly run.
It looks like GS has ‘beef’ wie Ben 10 due to him not following instructions against Man Yoo. He was asked to do a job and him not doing that job lead to them equalising.

Kevin-But that’s why Hutchinson might have a beef. I would be annoyed as well if I was only brought in the last 10 minutes of a game to try and prevent the other team from scoring…

So, say yer boss says: “Matt, call this guy he has a big contract for us and we will make a lot of money”…you decide not to call him and go on the Internet to look for porn.
Yer company loses the contract and the money. Yes, yer boss would be pissed right off at you and GS, if the story is true, is rightly pissed wie Ben 10.
He played Cillian Sheridan in front of him. I think it’s case closed on Ben 10.
