Mad Scientist Strachan to the lab

By: Matt | December 19th, 2008

With two weeks until the most important game of the season, Gordon Strachan has a chance to do some experimenting against Falkirk, one of the bottom feeders of the SPL. Before going to Ibrox to play Rangers to either extend the SPL lead to (presumably) 7 points or have the lead reduced to 1 point, Strachan will have to find out what works and what doesn’t this weekend. Of course, Aiden McGeady will not be available for Celtic for either game, though it seems that Strachan’s stance on the controversy has not wavered, but Celtic will also still continue to miss Shaun Maloney, Barry Robson, Massimo Donati, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, and Chris Killen. Marc Crosas could feature in the weekend’s match, returning from injury and trying to regain some fitness before the game at Ibrox. Paddy McCourt and Koki Mizuno have also been included into the squad for the match against Falkirk and might actually get some playing time, as Shunsuke Nakamura seems to be the only winger available to Strachan. Strachan could send Scott Brown to the wing as well, and put Marc Crosas and Paul Hartley in the middle. The match with Falkirk seems like the perfect time to experiment with these options. Hopefully one of these formulas will produce gold and build some chemistry going into next weekend’s match with Rangers.

Take a look at who’s out for the Bhoys (including McGeady – at his own doing). You’ve got the makings of a squad that would finish in the SPL Top 3 for sure.

Given that Celtic are still at the top of the table is a testament to Ginger’s managing abilities.

I’m glad to see Paddy’ll get some playing time.

Nick-I’m not sure if it’s a testament to Strachan’s abilities or the lack of quality in the bottom of the SPL. We’ve looked suspect against two good Hibs and Hearts teams with the injuries. I think we are miles better than them at full strength, but hopefully those two games were just bad days and not the team without JVOH, Crosas, McGeady, etc showing they had some problems.

The hibs game was poor. It didn’t help with Arturs clanger and two defenders in midfield for them. Fair play. It was a good result for Hibs.
The hearts game was off the back of a stunning display against Villarreal. As WGS said, we only became average in the last twenty minutes of the game. Hence, Aiden, Sammy and Caldwell were among the players to get a roasting by the Manager.
I see it as a minor blip in our title aspirations. Our squad is stronger than it has been in the last couple of seasons. Our neighbours only wish they had the depth of quality we have.
I suspect a display against Falkirk. A step back to the form that saw us on an unbeaten twelve game run. I want more from our strikers though. Skippy needs to get some confidence in front of goal and Sammy’s recent woeful touch needs improving. I think we’ll see it. I’m sure we’ll see it. I KNOW we’ll see it. Keep the faith Bhoys.

If we’re going to rebound, Falkirk is a good team to do it against.
