“NOTHING BAD EVERY HAPPENS TO A KENNEDY!”-*UPDATED 7/14/08*
By: Matt | July 13th, 2008
At one point, John Kennedy seemed to be the future of the center of Celtic’s backline. The Bhoy seemed to had loads of talent and the certain “intestinal fortitude” needed to be a top central defender. He even capped for Scotland in March of 2004, however this is where the dream seemed to turn into a nightmare for Kennedy. During his first match with Scotland, Kennedy suffered a knee injury that has kept him out of play for the better part of three years. In April, Kennedy made it back to first team football for Celtic and was given a three year contract extension. Yet, Kennedy seemed to be living in a reoccurring nightmare as on the biggest of stages, the Champions League, John Kennedy was stretchered off the pitch against Shaktar Donetsk and his season was yet again finished. Kennedy will have the chance to test his knee against first team SPL football for Motherwell as he goes to the Fir Park side on a 6 moth loan move. Hopefully Kennedy can get fit and reestablish himself as a top defender in the SPL.
Speaking of a Center Backs, Gordon Strachan and Celtic have certainly been linked with their fair share of possible additions at Center Back, including Gabriel Tamas, Danny Shittu, Marko Basa and Khalid Boulahrouz. It now seems that Strachan is looking to strengthen his backline in Scotland, by turning his sights to Hearts defender Christophe Berra. Berra has been capped for Scotland and Hearts have turned back a £1.5million offer from Wolves earlier this summer. It is expected that Celtic would have to offer up about £2 million for Berra.
UPDATE 7/14/08 Apparently, Celtic has said that a deal with Motherwell has fell through, however other clubs have expressed interest in Kennedy. With the all but done signing of Gabriel Tamas, it doesn’t seem like there would be much room for John Freakin’ Kennedy.
