Of Bhoys and Men - Celtic Wins Away. No Kidding.
By: Cham | December 10th, 2006Dunfermline - 1 (Simmons, 90)
Celtic - 2 (McGeady, 49; Zurwaski, 68)
A goal by former Bhoys Club Stephen Simmons at the end of fulltime prevented his side from being shutout, dissolved Boruc’s cleansheet, and screwed my fulltime 2-0 prediction. But Celtic continued their dominate Scottish Premier form, regardless of being away at East End Park.
The only other issue of note is the scuffle between Celtic keeper Artor Boruc and Neil Lennon, after conceding the Simmons’ goal in extra time. More on this later.
Celtic improves to 47 table points on 18 games, as Dunfermline remains at the bottom of Scotland’s top league, 12 points in 18 games.

Is is possible to have one of the most dominating years in the SPL, and still be a little … bored with it all?

I consider this too, when you look at how many hairs were pulled out over the loss in Copenhagen. Perhaps Hoops thinks that the Scottish Premier is theirs by divine right and that it’s time to be a major competitor on the UEFA/inter-league stage.
Say what you will about the dominance of Celtic, but the SPREM is a fun, scrappy league to watch, not unlike the competition between the top 10-12 teams in the EPL. Just look at the drop off after the top 4 teams in the premier Spanish or French leagues.
But the question remains: is Celtic too big for their britches and should just stick to being good at winning in Scotland? OR is it time to assert themselves in Europe? I believe these Champions League results will be the telling tale.

The only answer that I can come up with is one that too, too many people don’t want to see happen:
Create a British League that incorporates the top 15 EPL and top 5 SPREM teams.
Or, create a league with divisions (a la the National Football League).
I know that this will meet with a lot of hissing and booing. However, it is the only way for Celtic to improve - by playing top quality competition week in, week out.
As a Yank with no particular reason to root for either league, it just makes sense to me.

The one thing we don’t need is another cup of some kind. The FA, the Scottish, the UEFA (mickey mouse) cup.
On the other hand, an all UK league would be a wild idea.
But one thing is for sure- Celtic is in progress limbo.

An all UK league would be wild. I’d love to see it; but there’s too much money involved in the way it is now.
Here’s a half-cocked plan that’s probably just a dumb ideas, for many reasons that I’m not smart enough to figure out:
1. Take the two leagues, EPL and SPREM, (cutting out a few perrenial bottom-dwellers);
2. divide them into two divisions of 9 teams (with proportional amounts of teams from both leagues);
3. have the top two teams from both divisions go into a play-off for the league championship.
4. continue the promotion process.This a really, really quick attempt (because I’m supposed to be working); maybe, I’ll flesh it out later.

There are going to be those that argue that the EPL has far too much class to interbred with the likes of the Scottish Premier. It might take some investigating, but I’ll try and drum up the Uefa Champ and Cup results as of late and see how teh Scots are competing.
