Possible friendly against St. Pauli?

By: Matt | January 8th, 2009

In “Duh, it’s about time this happened” news, Randalstown CSC is reporting (I’m not a big fan of the paper they heard the news from) that Celtic might be the possible opponent for a “high profile friendly” for Bundesliga 2 side St. Pauli. The match would commemorate St. Pauli’s centenary. St. Pauli is looking at either having the Hoops or Bayern Munich . While Bayern might be a high profile match for the boys in brown, there is no denial the bond that Celtic and St. Pauli. St. Pauli are known for their great fans and ultras, such as the USP, and are known for their left leaning political views. Many St. Pauli supporters have also taken Celtic as their second club and there is even a vibrant St. Pauli CSC in Hamburg. If you are a MLS supporter, then you have probably used the USP’s “We Love You!” song seen here:

I’d assume Kev, since it’s for St Pauli’s centennial. If it occurs, was thinking I’d save my pennies for this one as well.

2 things: why is this “high profile”? I’ve never heard of this German 2nd division team and what happened about keeping politics/religion out of footbal?

Ken-Well, either us or Bayern would be the high profile aspect of the match. Not sure what a match up between us and St. Pauli would have to do with politics, surely you’ve seen evidence of the connection between Celtic and St. Pauli before. Hell, even the official online shop tries to profit off of it by selling some tshirts. As far as “keeping politics/religion out of football”, it seems that only applies to politics the chairman of Celtic does not enjoy. Not sure where religion comes into this affair.
