St Mirren 1-5 Celtic: Too Good
By: JT | September 3rd, 2007Celtic continued to play exquisite football, even while resting three of its regular four midfielders and coming off the emotional Champions League victory over Spartak Moskva, in thrashing St Mirren 5-1. Shunsuke Nakamura, Massimo Donati, and Aiden McGeady took a seat on the pine meaning Paul Hartley, Evander Sno, and Derek Riordan got the starting nods.
In another Man of the Match performance, the fourth member of the quartet, Scott Brown, opened the scoring when a Scott McDonald shot was deflected into his path. McDonald followed that up with a nice, angled chip over a stranded keeper three minutes later.
Donati came on for Sno, who WGS later said lacked match fitness, at the half. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink expertly headed home from a Riordan corner on 53, Riordan’s cross was deflected into the right corner by Buddies defender Marco Miranda at 56, and Stephen McManus got his name on the score sheet after two Riordan misses fifteen minutes from time. Miranda sort of redeemed himself with a 25 yard rocket of a consolation goal a minute later.
The Bhoys now get a two week rest by way of the international calendar before their next competitive match on September 15 at Celtic Park against Inverness Caley Thistle, which is a mere three days before the massive trip to Ukraine to take on Shakhtar Donetsk in the group stage opener.
Hopefully the momentum that Celtic have going right now doesn’t slow while they’re away, because this season is looking very bright from what we’ve witnessed thus far. Come back healthy you Hoops!

Even against St. Mirren, this is a big win for Celtic. The chance to rest is Nakamura is PRICELESS. He’s been overworked and has already shown signs of dropping off of form, so this rest is great. Their depth at midfield, in particular, is impressive. I really like the looks of the title race this season - looks like a classic Old Firm battle, and I hope it lasts as long as possible, whoever comes out on top.
