Summer Transfer Rumors….in March
By: Matt | March 16th, 2008
In the football world, the summer equals a time when the lack of football is replaced with either international games or summer transfer rumors. Probably my favorite of all time as a Celtic fan is the rumor that Becks was close to signing to play in the Hoops. It is not exciting stuff, but in between pool trips and summer jobs, it gets football fans through the summer. So imagine my surprise when I read the first juicy Celtic transfer rumor…in MARCH! (Everton not wanting Tommy Gravensen does not count)
The word on the street is that Harry Kewell (this rumor is dedicated to my Liverpool supporting friend, Evan) is off to Celtic this summer. Apparently Rafa said Kewell can shop around after there was a rift between the two after Kewell was not allowed to join the Australian National Team for training. Rafa’s mistake is Celtic’s gain, but then again it is a transfer rumor so take it with a grain of salt. My analysis of it is that if Kewell really does come in, someone (maybe a couple people) currently will be moving from the already crowded midfield/striker positions. My money is Massimo Donati (sadly, always liked the lad for some reason), Derek Sno, or the tourted soul of Derek Riordan. Before we brought Samaras, I could not understand why wee Deek could not get a game, but it was even more suspect that after Samaras was brought in, WGS did not move him. Much has been speculated about a possible rift between Strachan and Riordan and the Ginger Man could have wanted to stick it to Deek by having him sit on the bench for one more season. It is a shame to as he seems to have loads of talent, as I and anyone who was in Chicago for the Celtic-Fire friendly saw with that wunder strike.

I also edited the Motherwell post with it, but I’ll mention again that Motherwell and Celtic are having a tribute match for Phil O Donnell in May. http://www.celticfc.com/news/stories/news_140308173231.aspx

I was at the game in Chicago - what a goal! I’ve always liked Riordan, never understood why he is perpetually in Strachan’s doghouse. As for Kewell, he’s getting on in his career, and I picture him spending the next few years in the A-League and retiring.

Leonino-You’ll definitely have the Celtic supporters behind you!
John-There’s been a lot of talk that Strachan doesn’t think he works hard enough. What that means, I’m not sure but I also think he has talent and was hoping that at least WGS would transfer to give him a chance somewhere rather than rotting on our bench.

Sno or Massimo moving out??
Sno is a young boy, with loads of potential (as he showed in the second half of the Barca game at Camp Nou) and Donati just came in this year.
If anything Robson can get out. So old, I dont even know why we got him. Sadly, I do agree that Riordan will leave this summer. I was at the Celtic-Fire game also. What a player. On Kewell, A-league or SPL? I’d think he take the SPL to prove himself to Europe and play some more in the CL.
