Super County Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious

For all the woes of the season, an uninspiring Europa League campaign, trailing Rangers for near half a season, the sacking of Mowbray – for all of those grandly awful moments, you would have thought lifting the Scottish Cup at the end of the season would have brought a nice silver lining to an abysmal year. The Scottish Cup was something worth fighting for, worth clawing for, worth scraping for, worth kicking someone’s mum in the teeth for…

Ross County 2, Celtic nil

But no – today’s Celtic squad played truly uninspiring football to trail the Scottish First Divisioners Ross County by a goal, and then another before the final whistle. The defense was tatters throughout, and, while Samaras and Keane were a touch unlucky to not net late in the second half – Bhoys, you make yer own luck.

Celtic were playing as if a full-time draw and a sure penalty contest would have satisfied the Green and White who came to Oh Hampden in the Sun and the many watching around Scotland and the world. It wasn’t enough, and Celtic paid dearly for their complacency.

Rangers will not win the Scottish Cup either, but their loss to Dundee United (favorites now? God, who knows…) is little solace for Celtic, the Cup’s most successful club. I suppose a little bit of swagger and confidence is a good thing, until you expect the Cup to be gifted to you by a United, a Raith Rovers, or a Ross County.

Today’s loss will most likely rule out Neil Lennon’s direct ascendancy to full time Celtic boss. For the board, it’s time to do some severe naval-gazing and produce some answers to what will take Celtic back to the top of the Scottish game and compete in the international arena. But in the end, the players on the park did little to garner their supporters’ cheers and will have a handful of matches left in the season to show the remaining support at Celtic Park their play is worth the price of admission.
