Talkin’ with Strachan - Cup not so ebullient
By: Cham | February 24th, 2007
In Sky Sports, Gordon Strachan, perhaps blinded by the success of Celtic’s UEFA Champions League, has come out to say that the Scottish Cup competitions ain’t what it used to be.
“Both cups are losing their glamour for various reasons…It’s definitely not as glamorous for the spectators as it used to be…I remember FA Cup and Scottish Cup ties 25 to 30 years ago, they were the big games on the television.
He’s still intent on winning the silverware, however, regardless of its supposed decline
Celtic face Inverness Caley Thistle tomorrow at Caledonian Stadium. The Bhoys will look to avoid the Caley curse, as Inverness had upset Celtic in the 2000 and 2003. In Scottish Premier play, Celtic drew with the Caley Jags 1-1 away back in August, won 3-0 at Parkhead in November, and recently won away 1-0 at the end of January.
We are Celtic. This is the Celtic Offside Report.

For those who haven’t looked at theoffside’s frontpage, Bob’s got a great montage of GS quotes.
From the article that Cham linked to, here’s another money quote:
…there are so many games on television now, we are saturated with football. It’s hard to believe that someone who makes his (good) money through impressive television contracts for airing the matches that he actually manages would say such a thing.
But, of course, he’s right. I don’t mean to say that it’s a bad thing to have the availability of so many matches. I remember in the early 1990s when there was NO soccer on television, at least here in LA. (Uh, that’s Louisiana.)
Now, we have lots of soccer. But, now, there’s no anticipation for the matches. Sure, I can work myself up for certain matches.
When there was only one match available, there was more of a celebration. Turn the ringer off the phone, because I’m not answering it - even if it was Swindon Town v Oldham Athletic.
Today, aside from the Champions League matches, the REALLY big EPL stuff, or (of course) Celtic matches, the game is on in the background while I do other stuff.
I feel the same way about football. Now, we have (NFL !) games on from Thursday to Monday. College games are actually on Wednesday’s.
Can there be too much of a good thing? I think so. I don’t know; maybe I just nuts.

I think, for us American fans of the Beautiful Game, it’s a bit of both. I cherish immensely the presence of Rupert Murdoch’s brilliance, the Fox Soccer Channel, and I steal away to the pub for the Setanta games of utter importance. I suppose I only watch live matches and normally tune out when it’s a replay of two lower seeds in Serie A. But I love my football, and I know it would be different in the UK if I could watch top clubs, top matches, every other night.
Then again, I’ll have to wake myself up at 7am on a Sunday to watch Celtic at Inverness on the internet, Celtic TV, tomorrow morning, so I’ll take what I can get, when I can get it.
