From The Scotsman:
‘John Macmillan, the secretary of the Rangers Supporters Association, told The Scotsman: “In normal circumstances, there is nothing wrong with someone blessing themselves.
“But in today’s environment, it is not advisable to do it at a football match.”‘
Okay, so I’m far, far removed from Glasgow – and Ibrox especially – but since when is a football match in Christian Europe an occassion to leave off making the sign of the cross to bless one’s self?
Ridiculous.
More: ‘”A couple of the guys who get on my supporters’ bus said they had paid particular attention to him before the game started and they said he hadn’t blessed himself in front of the Celtic supporters. If that’s the case, you really have to ask why he did it at the Rangers end.”‘
I don’t know…maybe he was asking for special protection from flying objects down near the ‘gers section; maybe he did bless himself at the other end, and the ‘gers supporters “missed” his other blessing?
But who really cares?
He was simply making the sign of the cross in front of supposedly Christian fans.
(I know that there were probably fans from various religious traditions in the stadium. But, clearly, Scotland can be identified as a Christian country…still.)

I’m going to say a good bit about this in an upcoming post, but you are right in saying there should be nothing wrong in Boruc blessing himself before taking goal, no more than when Gilberto Silva scores a goal.
But the attention it got was fair.
Now, as a Catholic, I’m not going to not-cross myself because I’m playing in front of Protestant fans. They can get over it. And if they sing “Up tae yer knees in Finian blood” as a result, so be it. Let the Secretary of Rangers supporters take care of his fans. And if Gordon Strachan or Chairman Brian Quinn reprimand Artur Buroc if he wants or tell him not to do so before next time.

Players all over the world ask for a blessing when they step onto the pitch.
During the World Cup, in the Mexico-Iran match, one of the Iranian(!) players made the sign of the cross while entering the pitch before the game. To this day, there has been no report of his death or imprisonment, or an Iranian FA fine.
I’ve said this elsewhere – Who in the world would have thought that the ayatollahs in Iran would be more tolerant of Christian blessing themselves than are Christians in Europe?!
