Tommy Burns Rest in Peace
By: Matt | May 15th, 2008
It is with great sadness that the Celtic Offside has to report that Celtic coach, former player, and legend Tommy Burns has passed away. Tommy had been battling cancer and was 51.
Celtic have released numerous statements, including ones from the chairman,Coach Gordon Strachan, and Chief Executive Peter Lawwell. A Tommy Burns tribute video has also been created, which can be found here. Celtic fans can also leave tributes to Tommy online here. The world famous Tim Park has also made a very fitting compilation paying respect to Tommy.
Seeing that Tommy’s playing days were before my time, perhaps the best memory of Tommy Burns I have came this past August, when Celtic took on Spartak Moscow in a Champions League qualifier. As we all know, the game ended in dramatic fashion with Celtic defeating Spratak Moscow in penalty kicks to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League in Celtic Park. Jubilation was seen all around Celtic Park as strangers hugged strangers and the team celebrated like school bhoys. Included in that dog pile celebration was Tommy Burns, leaping on the players with the spryness of a 20 year old. This image will live in my memory when I think of Tommy Burns:

RIP Tommy. He was not only a great Celtic man but a great Scot loved by everyone in the Scottish game. Gordon Brown said it right – “one of the nicest people in football”. I remember that moment after the Spartak game too – I was in Scotland and when everyone was talking about the game the next day, it always came up whether you saw the leap from Tommy Burns. He’ll be missed.
