Wed’s Old Firm Match Postponed
By: JT | December 31st, 2007
Wednesday’s eagerly anticipated showdown with Rangers at Celtic Park has been postponed due to the tragic on-the-pitch collapse and subsequent death of former Celt and Motherwell captain Phil O’Donnell. Motherwell has also postponed their January 6 match with Celtic as a mark of respect for the death of a member of both club’s families.
O’Donnell made 89 appearances for Celtic, scoring 16 times. He picked up a Scottish Cup winner’s medal, and was part of the squad that won the league in 1998, halting Rangers’ nine championship win streak. He also won a Scottish Cup with Motherwell.
O’Donnell is survived by his wife and four children.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole O’Donnell family at this difficult time. As you celebrate the holidays with friends and family, please keep Phil and his family in mind. He was a consummate professional, an outstanding teammate, and a wonderful person.

It’s a tough call, but especially for Celtic, I think it’s the right one. O’Donnell was a great player and universally liked and respected in the SPL - it wouldn’t be right to play the SPL’s showpiece match within days of his death on the pitch, especially with his ties to the green side of Glasgow. On a purely competitive level, the two Old Firm sides are starting to look incredibly even, with Celtic having a great week after some stumbles, and Rangers continuing to look mediocre but win anyway. Whenever the next OF derby is played, it will be a scorcher, but now’s not the time.

I agree with you 100% Ian, on multiple fronts. Good call by the SPL in postponing the derby on Wednesday. Also, Celtic and the Huns are looking pretty even. We’ll see what the two sides come up with in January to strengthen.
