X-Men’s Wolverine is a Tim and He Hates the Huns!
By: Matt | August 6th, 2009As a child of the 90’s, I loved the comic books and television show “X-Men”. I shunned Power Rangers and much preferred these crime fighting mutants. Back in these days, easily my favorite X-Man was Wolverine. He was obviously the coolest, with his rebel attitude, sharp claws that came out of his hands, and his unbreakable bones (My college roommate still argues to this day that Nightcrawler was the best. Oh cool, you can disappear. So you’re power is to escape when there’s trouble, NOT!) Anyways, I obviously grew out of this phase and thought the recent live action movies were a little dull and not as good as the cartoon’s. However, while surfing the Tim-ernet recently, I found that my childhood hero was indeed a Celtic fan. Not only that, but he disliked “our city rivals” (as ToMo said in his BBC interview yesterday), as much as you and I! See for yourself!

Next, we see Wolverine’s foe in this issue. We can obviously tell that he is evil by the fact he is wearing a Rangers kit.

Finally, we see the final result, as Wolverine has clearly sent the evil Rangers fan to the fate that Bill Struth’s assistant coach met on that faithful day out on the sea’s. We see more evidence that this evil-doer was, in fact, a Ranger’s supporter.

I knew there was a reason I liked Wolverine!

Seeing as I’ve spent a sizable chunk of this summer reading tons of 90s X-Men issues, this just made my day, haha. Great find.
Wolvie is the de facto cool, tough guy of the X-Men. Everyone loves him, including me, but come on…your favorite? Such an expected choice. Rogue is totally where it’s at. “Oh, you have big adamantium claws you say? Wow, let me have a looksie. Oh whoops, your butt in unconscious on the ground, sorry there…and I just stole your claws.” Beast, Nightcrawler, and Gambit are all tied for second.

Hana-Haha, well I was a 5-10 year old boy at my peak X-Men follow days, so obviously I wouldn’t choose a girl. My brother chose Beast as his favorite, so again, I clearly couldn’t choose that one as well. I’ve explained my thoughts about Nightcrawler, though Gambit was my second pick as well.
The forum where I found this, someone posted this message, which I thought was particularly insightful.
“Marvel was always very political in their comics – particularly in the X-Men which I’m sure everyone here knows that it was created in the 60’s and has had a lot to do with Equal Rights. Look at the parallels: it’s pretty obvious that Professor Xavier carries Martin Luther King, Jr. beliefs, and Magneto carries Malcolm X’s beliefs. Also consider some of the hammerheads the X-Men had to deal with, The Friends of Humanity (racist non-mutant KKK/Orange Order types), and Col. William “Bill” Stryker, M.D who was in the second movie. The second movie stayed away from the Evangelical Bible Thumping Reverend side Stryker though. He was a Televangelist who is almost a mirror image of Ian Paisley. They’re only two examples.”
Interesting stuff.

I just love characters that are snarky, and Beast and Nightcrawler fit the bill perfectly, and in often hilarious fashion. And Gambit is one smooth, cool Cajun, enough said.
But the little blurb you posted is right on. That’s one of the main things I love about X-Men: so many parallels with the world we live in, really quite the profound story. I love how X-Men doesn’t feel the need to stay confined to the struggle for mutant rights, but regularly presents issues about racism, homophobia, and religious intolerance. The struggle for mutant rights and tolerance is an obvious shoutout to the civil rights movement, but the comparisons between Xavier and Magneto, and MLK and Malcolm X isn’t one I hadn’t really thought of before. Makes perfect sense though once you think about it.
Incidentally, would you happen to know what comic/issue the page you posted is from? Looks to be on the more recent side.
On a last note, I don’t know if you’ve seen this, but it makes me chuckle everytime. I reckon a Wolvie lover like you will enjoy it. It’s from the failed 1989 X-Men pilot (pre-excellent 90s series), in which someone was high, and cast Wolverine as Australian. Hilarity ensues.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4d7TEvwznA
