Some points must be made on this shameful display. First of all, if I was a Arsenal fan, I would be EMBARRASSED if a player on my club first performed such heinous acts of simulation to earn a penalty and then after converting said penalty, go over and run to the camera and pose like he performed some great football feat and actually showed some skill, besides being able to fall over and embarrass himself. Secondly, while Arsenal scored two more goals on the day, earning your first goal in such a way will crush any team’s morale. If Arsenal’s first goal isn’t earned by a cheat, who knows what would have happened. Celtic had an uphill climb, but they scored 2 away from home in the last round. No matter what, what was supposed to be an entertaining fixture is marred by one of the bigger problems in the game today. Oh well, onto Hibs on the weekend and the Europa League.

Be prepared to read that headline for the next few weeks…a lot. The S*n, they’ve probably trademarked that slogan already. The Daily Ranger? Oh yeah, they’ll be wearing out the “b” key on their press. The Herald, The Times, etc. You bet. As there were only two teams from “Britain” in the Champions League draw, you’ve probably figured by now that Celtic have drawn Arsenal in the “playoff” of the Champions League (what a stupid name, by the way). Charlie Nichols head will probably explode during the pre-game of this match. Celtic’s high spirits after defeating Dinamo Moscow will be put to the test, with a match against the highest rated team left in qualifying. Yes, Arsenal are a great team and it will be a challenge, This same Arsenal team dispatched of our “city rivals” (Thank you, ToMo for that great phrase), but let’s look at the positives, shall we.
-Tony Mowbray has got Celtic feeling like world beaters and the team has looked good so far, especially when handling Arsenal’s London rival’s Spurs.
-A trip to London means there will be a good sized Celtic contingent in the away stand of the Emirates.
-Nothing like testing out your squad against one of the best teams in the world. It’ll be a tough fixture, no bones about it, but it will be a great way to see how we are doing.
-We have 100% European Cup titles than Arsenal. As the kids say, Just Sayin’.
-With the match up against Arsenal, maybe “I’m on Setanta Sports” will mention us when Jose calls the Voyeur. Shut up Voyeur!
-Finally, I don’t know if you knew this, but for this Champions League campaign, WE HAVEN’T LOST AWAY IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE YET! (tongue firmly in cheek, Gunner fans).

Bring on the Gunners. C’mon the Hoops! KEEP THE FAITH!

Your basic rundown of the game, your highlights (are they still up or have the fun police come yet?), and your pure unadulterated joy of finally winning a match away from Celtic Park in the Champions League. We clearly out played the Russians yesterday. From the kick-off, they were clearly playing for the draw, putting 10 and sometimes even 11 men behind the ball in an all out defense. For the first 43 minutes of the match, it was pretty effective and Celtic could not get many good chances on the Dinamo Moscow goal. However, a perfect Andreas Hinkel cross and a good finish by Scott McDonald finally opened the scoring for Celtic. Since they no longer could just defend, Dinamo had to try and attack. However, their attacks were pretty toothless, with their only chances coming off corners. Andreas Hinkel saved the day yet again, when he saved a near goal off the line during one of these corners. For most of the second half, Celtic controlled most of the possession. Scott Brown and Georgios Samaras came on as subs and seemed to change the game for Celtic. Brown created numerous scoring chances and seemed to relish his new role playing behind the strikers. Shaun Maloney nearly won the game with a chance alone on goal in the 88th minute, but shot it right at the keeper. It mattered not, as Georgios Samaras got his chance and took it. I’ve got to imagine Celtic supporters all over the world were yelling at Samaras to shoot it, but he held it just long enough and put it past the Dinamo keeper.

I decided to try a player rating system this time, let me know if you like this better or if you like my random bullet points I usually go with.

Boruc-8-Didn’t have much to do and one one corner was beat, but Hinkel saved him.
Hinkel-10-Set up both goals and saved a goal. Ran rings around the Dinamo wings and fullbacks. My Man of the Match.
Caldwell-7.5-Not a great game, but solid.
Loovens-7.5 See Heeeid.
Fox-8.5-Still seems nervous and struggled at the beginning, but settled down. Played some good defense, which isn’t his best suit.
McGeady-7-Did some fancy footwork, but his final ball was atrocious.
N’Guemo-9.5-Ruled the midfield. Only thing keeping him from a 10 was the yellow he picked up. I think he thought he was fouled and got frustrated, and took it out with his Rugby tackle. He better get use to not getting calls in the SPL.
Donati-8-Passing still something left to be desired, but I thought one of his better games with us. Seems to realized that he’s a big guy and can win a 50-50 chance and strung a few passes.
Maloney-6.5-Struggled with corners and free kicks and didn’t see much else of him. Should have scored the chance before Sammy did.
Fortune-8-Showed his game, which is holding the ball and creating chances for others. Held the ball well in the box which lead to Skippy’s goal.
McDonald-7-Not much from him besides the goal. Still, he got a goal.

Subs:
Brown-9-Came on like a man possessed and put Dinamo on the back foot. Created some great chances.
Samaras-9-Did a good job controlling in his sub stint and obviously did well in his goal.

ToMo-10-Perfect game. Knew that Dinamo would be bunkered in and came up with a great plan for it. Got the subs exactly right tonight it seems.

Celtic’s Champions League qualifying campaign will begin in Russia’s capital city. Today’s Champions League draw matched Celtic up with last year’s third place Russian League team Dinamo Moscow. The first leg of the tie is scheduled for Celtic Park on Wednesday, July 29, with the return leg in Moscow the following week, Wednesday, August 5. With the Russian League already well under way, Dinamo Moscow currently sit seventh after thirteen matches, but Celtic are likely to take this for granted after taking on Aalborg last year in their Champions League group. Of course, two years ago Celtic were in the Russian capital for another Champions League qualifier, taking on Dinamo’s city rivals Spartak Moscow. After a 1-1 draw in Moscow, the sides fought out a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park, with Celtic progressing to the group stages of the Champions League following a dramatic penalty shoot-out, seeing Artur Boruc make some keys saves to Celtic win. Tony Mowbray said of the draw, “Russian teams are very fit, methodical and organised and I’m sure they will give us a tough test. But I’m sure they are looking at the draw and thinking it is a big ask for them. We are happy to take whoever it was and I don’t have any preferences in cup draws. We are not in the industry of making excuses. In a strange sort of way, while you would like to play the second game of the tie at home, after the traveling we have done it is a benefit that we will be at home first.” If Celtic progress to the second qualifying round, they will be drawn against either Arsenal, Lyon, Stuttgart, Fiorentina or Atletico Madrid, who are the seeds in the next stage of the best-placed path. Could have been a better draw, but it could have been worse. Dinamo are struggling now it seems, but these qualifiers are their own animal. I really really really wanted English national team failure and coach of Twente FC Steve McClarren made some noise, saying he wanted Celtic in the draw. It would have been nice to send McClarren home crying, like he use to when Wayne, Stevie, and Fat Frank would be mean to him. Such a shame we can’t. Oh well. Bring ‘em on.

Of course, a trip to Moscow is a good excuse to bust this video out.
The Wee Man sent the ball into an open net in the 14th minute. Aiden McGeady finished off the first half by netting home a shot just outside the box after a brilliant build up by Celtic. For a game meaning <del datetime="00">fuck all</del> little, fans certainly got an entertaining affair. Celtic created lots of chances and played some pretty attractive football. Of course, it was way too little way too late, but hopefully Gordon Strachan takes not that good passing and attacking movement brings success in the Champions League, not flash in the pan defensive/counterattacking formations. Celtic saw the return of Aiden McGeady and Georgios Samaras from injury, as well as a return of Shunsuke Nakamura to the lineup, after missing the weekend’s match against Hibs. Naka played wonderfully finding the open man and making pretty passes all night. Andres Hinkel also put in a good shift. Hinkel had bounds of room on the wing after Villareal was reduced to ten men. Going into a big run in the SPL, it was also refreshing to see a healthy Aiden McGeady run rampant on the Villareal defense. The team at Celtic Park tonight and the team in the Capital at Easter Road were like night and day, and I would hope the lineup seen tonight would also get a run out against Hearts this weekend.

Well Celtic Fans, I’ve got good news and bad news. Let’s get the bad out of the way, shall we? Celtic pretty much ended any chance of European Competition after Christmas by losing 2-1 in Denmark yesterday against Aalborg. Barry Robson was able to put Celtic up in the 53rd minute, but Aalborg equalized in the 73rd minute. Then Gary Caldwell, who had a solid game otherwise playing out of position in a holding midfield spot, had a Glen Loovens clearance attempt bounce off of his knee and into the back of the net in the 87th minute. A Celtic player had once again netted a late winner in a Champions League match, only it went into his own net. It was cruel irony that Caldwell put in the own goal, since for many of the Champions League matches Caldwell was the best player on the pitch and has seen his performances improve by leaps and bounds since last year. There is some good to come of this, however…

Perhaps this season’s poor run in the Champions League will get Penny Pincher Desmond Dermot to open his wallet and buy players to help us get over the Last 16 hump (a hump we could not even reach this year). You can talk all you want about getting over said hump, but if you do not make the investments then all it is is just talk.

Secondly, as our blue neighbors across town showed last year, there’s something to this whole fixture congestion thing. Of course you want to be in every competition possibly, but the sound of a treble is a nice one. Celtic have a CIS Cup Semi Final to worry about, a rather successful SPL campaign so far, and the Cup to try and win back. The UEFA Cup and more travels across Europe would be nice, but with the rash of injuries Celtic has faced, one less fixture might be ok.

Finally, I have been critical of Gordon Strachan on here numerous times, but in no way should Strachan be fired for last night’s loss. As mentioned earlier, this squad remained largely unchanged from the previous season, so further advancement could not have been expected. Gordon Strachan has navigated Celtic to 3 titles in a row, eleven wins in a row, and a four point lead in the SPL.

So, as my good buddy Stephen Colbert would say, Scottish Football…YOU’RE ON NOTICE!

The talking point of the match is sure to be the near red card miss for Artur Boruc after a late tackle on St Mirren’s Craig Dargo in the first half. Many in the Scottish media felt that the late tackle deserved a red, but it seems like the tackle was not malicious and Boruc was not “the last man back”. No matter what many blowhards opinions are, Boruc stayed in after only receiving a yellow.

Celtic now travel to Denmark on Tuesday to take on Aalborg in the likely decider Champions League match of the campaign. This game will most likely decide who gets the parachute Uefa Cup spot as both teams sit on two points in the standings.

As Celtic travel to Denmark, the injuries woes that plagued Celtic during this unlikely eleven game unbeaten run continue to be resolved. Aiden McGeady has recovered from his calf and knee problems and will be traveling with the club. He will be put through a fitness test Monday night and a determination will be made about his availability for Tuesday’s match. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who is recovering from Jan Vennegooring his Hesselink (aka a groin pull) has also been included in the squad for Tuesday. Paul Hartley has also recovered from his injury sustained during his Scottish National Team duty and should be in the squad as well.

Usually, when Celtic is away in the Champions League, Gordon Strachan likes to play a 4-5-1 and counter attack, a strategy that has done bully for us so far. Now that Celtic face a must win situation away from home, one would hope that Strachan opens up play a little. With Celtic becoming healthy, the team has more attacking options to choose from, rather than “DOWN FIELD!” clearances. The team is in good form and NEEDS TO WIN. Let them attack, Ginger man, let them attack!

Remember remember the fifth of november…I’ll remember being pissed that Celtic drew Manchester United. Celtic had the current European Champions on the ropes for 83 minutes but could not deliver the knockout punch, or if we want to use a proper boxing metaphor Celtic could not run around the ring and avoid getting punched after punching the bigger stronger guy once. Celtic jumped out front in the 13th minute after Scott McDonald sent a cheeky little flick over the head of United keeper Ben Foster. While United held an edge on possession at that point, Celtic put together a few counter punches (what’s with the boxing references?) and finally found the back of the net. Celtic were able to frustrate and keep United off their game for the rest of the first half and the teams went into the locker room with Celtic in front. The second half started and everyone knew that Fergie was not amused with the first half. It is no secret that Gordon Strachan and Fergie aren’t pals, and I doubt that Fergie liked the idea of taking two defeats at Celtic Park to the wee ginger man.

So in came Berbatov and Rooney. The Man United assault started almost as soon as the second half whistle blew, with United creating chance after chance after chance, but the Celtic defense would not break. However, it was a Celtic substitution that seemed to change the game. Young Cillian Sheridan had a decent run about in this high profile start for the youngster, but as the second half wore down he was removed for Massimo Donati. While I have been critical of Donati in the past, I don’t think he played poorly. I do think that Celtic went from a team that defended with the odd counter attack to keep Man U on their toes to a all hands on deck, defend and hoof it up field team. The trend continued when Shaun Maloney and Scott McDonald were removed for Ben Hutchinson and Darren O’Dea. 5 Defenders allowed United’s back line to camp out at midfield and just play the long clearances back to the Ronaldo’s and Rooney’s (Ronaldo is a diving cunt, by the way. He’s also lucky that Scott Brown didn’t break his fibula a la Roy Keane style when Ronny took a kick at him. I use to sympathize with Ronny, now he’s on my shit list. Wanker.) It was inevitable at this point that United were going to find a chance and it is a shame that it was seven minutes from full time. If you would have told me that we would have drew 1-1 at the beginning of the game I would have been excited, but the final whistle left a bad taste in my mouth.

Some other talking points:
-Artur Boruc had a decent game, but on every cross played by United he looked uneasy. I don’t want to make my final decision yet but it seems like he bottled Ronaldo’s long range shot to put it right at Giggs feet.
-People clammering for Darren O’Dea and Ben Hutchinson got their wish tonight, but neither were effective and I do not remember 100% but I believe O’Dea was on Giggs or not on for that matter.
-The crowd was great. Not just the same sing songs of “Hail Hail”, “YNWA”, and “Fields of Athenry”, I heard Celtic Symphony, Let the People Sing, and others. On a related note, a big “fuck you” to the Manchester United fans in attendance. The term “You only sing when your winning” seems to fit and congrats on the “FTP and the IRA” chants at the end of the game. You are just huns with Malcolm Glazer indeed.
-Great display from the Green Brigade that ESPN caught. Clever stuff with it being the 5th of November. As soon as I find some pictures, I’ll get them up here!

It was always going to be a tough task getting points at Old Trafford, given Celtic’s away history and United’s class, but things were not helped when four key Celtic players missed the match due to injury. For all of these reasons, Manchester United was able to defeat Celtic 3-0 on matchday 3 of the Champions League. There was some controversy surrounding United’s first two goals by Berbatov, as it seemed like he was offside for both yet the linesman’s flag stayed down. However, before scoring the third goal of the game, Wayne Rooney seemingly had a good goal taken away by a offsides call that was not offsides, so the shitty linesman giveth, the shitty linesman taketh away. Celtic did not see much of the possession during the game, but unlike another team’s European travels, when Celtic did see the ball they tried to get forward and had a couple of very good chances. Aiden McGeady forced Edwin Van Der Saar to make a diving save early in the first half. The best player for Celtic on the day, Gary Caldwell who played a defensive midfield role, fired a good shot that Van Der Saar had to deflect into the stands. Celtic played a decent first half, though was lucky to only be down one goal.

The second half was another story. Celtic came out of the locker room flat and seemed as if they were already defeated. The kept even less possession than in the first half and seemingly lacked any good scoring opportunities. After a good performance, especially considering the opponent, in the first half by the defense, man marking became lazy and Celtic was lucky that United only scored twice in the half. Overall, it was a disappointing trip down south, but there were a few positives to take from it.

Gary Caldwell continues his renaissance. After spending most of last season as a whipping bhoy, Gary Caldwell’s performances continued to improve. His SPL performances as a member of the backline have been wonderful and when put into the central defensive midfield role against Man U, he was Celtic’s Man of the Match. He can play a good long ball and has the ability to stop counter attacks, a key trait for a central midfielder. It is not as if Celtic are in dire need for more center backs (take Massimo Donati…please!), but if a situation as last night where there are injuries, it is good to know Caldwell can step in and take care of business.

The defense held the current European Champions for 45 minutes. Besides a goal that probably should not have counted, the Celtic defense was able to keep the likes of Ronaldo, Berbatov, and Rooney without any real scoring opportunities. Sure United had the possession for most of the half (mostly because Scott McDonald has seemingly left his first touch in Australia), but the goal was the only real good scoring opportunity and the Celtic defense was able to eventually deal with everything else.

Aiden McGeady continues to make midtable EPL teams drool. Aidendinho was the only offensive threat that Celtic had, but it was almost enough in the first half. Seeing that McDonald, Naka, and co. couldn’t hold water if they were a sponge, Aiden often had to take on the entire Man U defense and did so a couple times effectively. He was also about a centimeter away from putting Celtic up a goal early. But there was plenty of bad for Celtic.

McDonald and Nakamura go missing again. Have you seen Scott McDonald or Shunsuke Nakamura? There families and national teams are worried for their safety. Seriously, how many times did Caldwell play a pretty good long ball to McDonald, only to have Skippy butcher the first touch and give the ball back to United. If Strachan is going to insist on playing a 4-5-1 in away European ties, then we need a striker that can win the ball. I know Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Georgios Samaras were out, but McDonald does not seem like a striker suited for the 4-5-1. Hell give Hutchinson a chance before McDonald in that formation. Nakamura is known for his free kick abilities but did not really have a good chance on net for a free kick, which is not his fault. However, his corner taking was awful. The first corner of the game for Celtic, Naka sends the ball behind the net. BEHIND THE NET! When I saw that, I knew it was going to be a long game

After a good 45 minutes, the defense decides they no longer need to mark these guys. “Ronaldo? Ah, he’s got him. Rooney? Nah, no need to close him down. Berbatov? Why mark HIM in a dead ball situation?” The backline did a complete 180 after a good performance in the first half. United had boat loads of chances mostly to unmarked men, bad giveaways, and general incompetency.

So now we have 1 pt, with Manchester United at home, Vilareal at home, and away to Aalborg. Qualification is looking unlikely, so perhaps focus on a UEFA Cup spot. I think we can beat Vilareal or Man U at home, but it will likely come down to Aalborg away.
