The only goal of the game came in the eleventh minute from Paddy McCourt. McCourt took a short corner from Graham Carey, ran at a Cork full-back and juked into space inside the box. Then McCourt lashed an unstoppable drive into the top corner from 15 yards and netted the only goal of the game. Celtic was managed by Neil Lennon and Danny McGrain, and saw the first start for Barry Robson since last February. Robson was able to last the full 90 minutes, which was a good sign. Hopefully we will see Robson in a starting XI, especially with both the suspensions and injuries plaguing the Bhoys after the international break. Mark Wilson also continued his recovery from injury yesterday, putting forth a 90 minute shift as well. Marc Crosas and Koki Mizuno were the other first team players who started for Lennon at Turner’s Cross. Hopefully, this friendly was able to generate the necessary funds for the Rebels, who have been struggling financially for a few years now.

Celtic took on Benfica last night in a friendly in the Great White North. The Benfica squad saw numerous first teamers, while the Celtic squad was mostly youngsters, and it showed as Benfica defeated Celtic 3-1. Here are some quick thoughts about the youngsters.
-Despite being one of the few veterans last night, Andreas Hinkel looked the most inexperienced of them all. Two Hinkel defensive gaffs lead to two Benfica goals and it seemed that Benfica focused most of their attacks to Hinkel’s right side. Hinkel’s a great attacking fullback, but his defense is beginning to be a liability.
-Last night was the first start for American goalkeeper Dominic Cervi. I thought Cervi looked good and rather comfortable against some pretty good talent. He might have done better on the third goal, but there was nothing he could have done for the first two. He handled the box well and was able to distribute the ball quickly. Nice job, Big Dom!
-Paddy McCourt was also impressive yesterday. McCourt made some good runs and nearly got a woner-goal from a long blast that hit the cross bar. Just an inch lower, and McCourt’s goal would be on highlight reals all over. Despite that, he did well.
-Pretty much all the youngsters that got a run out at least held there own against a quality opponent. Hopefully there’s some gems for the future. I’d also like to add young Josh Thompson is a giant in the role of a Center Back and can be quite physical.

Celtic wore their new “Bumblebee Kit” today and they did the famous kit justice by easing their way to a 5-0 victory over Egyptian side Al-Ahly today in the opening match of the Wembley Cup. Massimo Donati started the rout shortly after the half-hour mark for Celtic, before Shaun Maloney, Chris Killen and a brace from the lively Scott McDonald rounded off a comfortable evening’s work. Celtic controlled the match from the beginning, though Artur Boruc had to make a few good saves to keep the Egyptian champions off the score sheet. There were also a few instances where Celtic’s goals were on the verge of being offside, and one might have the feeling that the goals would have been flagged in *ahem* the SPL. Massimo Donati also got Celtic on the score sheet first by capitalizing on some poor defending by Al-Ahly. Scott McDonald then put away a penalty later in the first half. McDonald doubled his tally in second half, and Shaun Maloney and Chris Killen also got goals in the Celtic rout. Join me after the jump for some post-match thoughts and video of the goals (while they last).

-For the second game in a row, I was impressed by Marc Antoine Fortune and Landry N’Guemo’s work rate. Both worked hard, kept good possession of the ball, and were important to the Celtic attack.
-After struggling in the match against Cardiff City, Scott McDonald got two goals, which really, is the most important thing for a striker.
-Did Lee Naylor look like a guy fighting for his job or what? I’ve never seen Naylor go as forward as much as he did today. Naylor probably sees the writing on the wall, what with a frantic scramble yesterday to sign young Danny Fox. Naylor worked hard today, but most of his offensive endeavors ended with either dribbling into a midfielder or sending the cross into the fourth row. Enjoy the reserves, Lee.
-How did Massimo Donati start again? Besides the goal, he was again unimpressive. The goal was a Ramadan gift from Al-Ahly, so hopefully that does not earn him more playing time. Marc Crosas did get a run out in today’s game and passed the ball well. Even if Scott Brown is not going to be healthy enough for the home leg of the Champions League Qualifier, Crosas should be starting over Donati.
-Chris Killen is making a case to be the third striker for Tony Mowbray. Killen struggled in Cardiff, but had another goal today. Frankly, I don’t care if you score all your goals having the ball bounce off your arse, scoring three goals in three games is good enough for me. Shaun Maloney has also played well and could play up with Marc Antoine-Fortune and Scott McDonald.

So a good start to the Wembley Cup and nice to get some goals. I would expect to see some more reserves in the side for Sunday’s match against Spurs, but we’ll see. Tomorrow, my discussion with Spurs blogger Drew about the match on Sunday. Until then,….

Celtic and Cardiff City finished today’s match with a scoreless draw. Celtic put forth a strong starting XI for the first half, though with some obvious Italian midfielder exceptions, and were able to create some attractive football and some good chances. Unfortunately, Celtic were not able to capitalize on this pressure in the first half. Artur Boruc also seemed like the Holy Goalie of old, making a few great saves, keeping the Bluebirds of the score sheet. With two friendlies this weekend and a huge Champions League qualifier next week, much of the expected first team was removed for the second half, and much of the attacking prowess that was seen in the first half was lost. Chris Killen, Lee Naylor, Massimo Donati, and Georgios Samaras took the air out of the ball unintentionally, and the game slugged to a 0-0 draw. Continue with me after the break and I’ll give you my thoughts about this friendly!

-Both new signings seemed to have good games. Marc Antoine Fortune had a few chances he should have finished better, but he’s quick and strong and can beat defenders. Landry N’Guemo also played well in almost 80 minutes of play. He controlled the midfield for Celtic and seemed very strong for his size, shoeing off defenders in the midfield. The combination of his strength and passing ability will be a good fit in the SPL
-Early in the first half, Lee Naylor played a pretty good cross into the box that led to a scoring chance and I thought, “Could we really be seeing a new and improved Lee Naylor?” My question was answered with a resounding “no!” Crosses straight to defenders, into touch, and “shots” that are insulting to the word “shot” seemed to come with ease from the left peg of Naylor, ending any dreams of an improved Lee Naylor. Ironically, rumors were abound after the match that Celtic have already signed a replacement for Naylor and this replacement was at the match as a guest of the club. These rumors say that he is Brazilian and was playing left back on the winning side of the Champions League final last year. Potential signing boner!
-Georgios Samaras has the first touch of a clumsy elephant. On the other end, I thought Shaun Maloney played a wonderful game, setting up much of the Celtic attack and was one of the fastest players out there. If Mowbray goes with a 4-3-3 domestically, I would not mind seeing Maloney on the wing with Fortune and McDonald.
-Speaking of Skippy, he did not have one of his better games. Seemingly a step behind and giving away possession easily, he was just off. Hopefully it was just one game.
-Get Massimo Donati on a taxi…NOW! Not good enough. ToMo was nice enough to give him a chance, but 90 minutes of shite passing, poor tackling, and surprise surprise, running his mouth to get a yellow card…IN A FRIENDLY! I hope that Marc Crosas did not get in today just to give Donati a chance and ToMo will be using him the rest of the way.

Celtic take on Egyptian side Al-Ahly this Friday at the Wembley Cup and then Spurs on Sunday. I’ll be talking to Spurs Offside blogger Drew soon, so look for that. Of course, next week brings the Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Moscow.

Questions about Artur Boruc’s fitness and whether or not he’d remain with Celtic were asked in the lead up to the match, but his performance down under was a blinder, making some great saves in his 45 minutes of the match. Boruc made brilliant one-handed stops to deny Robbie Kruse and Sergio van Dijk in the opening stages of the match, allowing Celtic to keep a clean sheet before Celtic got onto the board. In the second half, Lukasz Zaluska came in and had less to do than Boruc, but was also able to keep the clean sheet. Chris Killen put Celtic ahead after 39 minutes, heading home a Lee Naylor cross, and then fired home from a Shaun Maloney pass three minutes later. Mizuno headed the third from an Andreas Hinkel cross after the break. It was a good start for Celtic, with unexpected leaders showing the way.

As Celtic continue their second week of camp, operations will move over to Oz, as Celtic prepare for their first pre-season friendly against the Brisbane Roar this Sunday, and old pal Bob Malcolm. In a feature that I hope to use a lot this upcoming season, I talked to the Roar’s blogger on the Offside, Ahmed and picked his brain about the Roar, Bob Malcolm and co., football being third fiddle in Australia and the return of Queensland’s favorite son, Scott “Skippy” McDonald.

Matt: First off, a brief history of the Brisbane (Queensland?) roar? Famous former players, great accomplishments, how’d the team do last year, etc?

Ahmed:Formation: Brisbane Roar started in 2005 at the formation of the new Hyundai A-League. The club originally knows as Queensland Roar was one of 8 teams to kick off the competition. The name change came about this season with the introduction of Gold Coast United and North Queensland Fury, meaning the Roar are not the only Queensland representative and hence, Brisbane Roar. The A-League replaced the old NSL and the Roar takes its heritage from the Queensland Lions Soccer Club. Currently, the club is owned by several shareholders:

    * Emmanuel Drivas and Emmanuel Kokoris (Also own The Coffee Club) – 30%
* Claude Baradel and Serge Baradel (Also own Luxury Paints) – 15%
* Football Federation Australia – 55%

It has been said the Roars first season in the inaugural A-League was more successful off-field than on. The club was the first to have 100,000 spectators pass through the gates and overall had the second highest attendance for the season (148,609) and despite failing to qualify for the finals, the club’s home attendance was the second highest in the opening season (average 14,860 a game)

Who are some notable players past or present from the Roar?
Our most Notable players would be Craig Moore and Danny Tiatto who have both played in Europe. Other notable players are David Williams and Dario Vidosic also plying their trade in Europe now. Notable players amongst the fans include, Michael Zullo, Matt Mckay, Mass Murdocca, Liam Reddy and Charlie Miller. The Roar has prided itself in producing many young players and some have gone on to play in Europe. Not many players would be notable on the world stage, but would be well known in Australia.

Greatest Achievements in the Club’s history?
We still a very young club and our greatest achievements have been reaching the Preliminary Final the past 2 seasons. We lost the games meaning we finished 3rd and missed out on a Grand Final spot.

Any transfers in or out yet this transfer season? Has the season started? If it has not started, what are your thoughts for the upcoming season? What are the Roar’s chances?

Transfers in: Henrique – Atletico Mineiro

                 Bob Malcolm – Motherwell

Adam Sarota and Matt Mundy – Youth Squad

Transfers out: Tahj Minniecon – Gold Coast United

Chris Grossman – North Queensland Fury

Hyuk Su Seo – Brisbane Olympic

Season has not yet started. I believe the Roar can win the competition. Over the past two seasons we have shown the skill to go all the way and win the competition. We have come 3rd in the last two seasons and have only missed out on the Grand Final by a whisker. The fans really believe that we can win the competition. For the past two seasons we have been very strong and consistent compared to the other teams in terms of our attacking and chance creation. We seem to be lacking the killer instinct in front of goal, but Frank Farina has stressed that the team is working on that and doing all that is necessary to win the title. We have been the more consistent team the past 2-3 years and always improving, many fans feel this could be our year. Bookies have us as second favourite, but well see how go.

So, Brisbane has been acquiring numerous former members of Glasgow Rangers, Celtic’s bitter rival, including Craig Moore, Charlie Miller, and most recently Bob Malcolm. Is this a conscious decision by the Roar’s leadership? Does the Roar support have any leanings towards Celtic or Rangers?

I don’t think it’s a conscious decision. Many retiring or ageing players have spoken of their interest in the A-league. I think it’s just been easier to negotiate with ex-Rangers players due to the influence from Miller and Moore. This may also be seen as a good move as it makes the players settling down in Australia, much easier. There is no affiliation or leanings to a certain club, I don’t think, it’s just the way things have panned out. Celtic enjoys a big following in Australia and in Brisbane too.

Scott McDonald will be the home-town bhoy coming home in this match. Does the Brisbane community still keep up with McDonald’s career? Is there any buzz about the home-town McDonald coming home with the famous Celtic FC?

We do follow McDonald’s career. It’s been sad as he has not yet scored or shone on the international stage, so for the football fan who only watches the Socceroos or A-league games, they would probably question the hype. Having said that, the keen football follower knows just how big a player and asset he is. We are looking forward to seeing many Celtic players, including Samaras, Mcgeady, Boruc et al.

It’s a bit of a pity as the game is so close to State of Origin. It’s a rugby league tradition going back almost 3 decades. This is a really big event in Queensland and New South Wales and unfortunately with the current series being record breaking and on the cusp of a whitewash, the media have not been too kind to the upcoming Roar-Celtic clash. Adverts are visible in the city, but the media has been very poor with their coverage of the clash and I am yet to see a news article on TV regarding the match. Despite all this, I can guarantee the fans will be out in force for the game and im hoping to see a see of green and orange.

Thoughts on the Australian League? It has seemed to rise in prominence around the world with the continued success of the Socceroos, games being broadcasted on channels like Fox Soccer Channel, and blogs like yours. Would you agree there’s been a rise in the league and what do you see for the future of club soccer in Australia?

The Australian League is very young and yes it is rising every year. Clubs are reporting increased memberships and fans are taking more note of football. The biggest problem to football is the media. Despite getting games on Fox Sports, that is all you get. You get the live games of EPL or A-league and a highlights package and then one magazine show for an hour on each league. These all take place over a 3-4 day period. The timing of the shows is also very poor and is usually very late. It’s not very good for these sports. The journalists in this country have not been kind to the sport at all. They try to knock it back at every possible opportunity. They are much rugby and AFL orientated and this is very damaging for the sport. It’s been a problem as we as fans are not getting the coverage we deserve and the sport is suffering in terms of growth. The buzz world cup time as amazing, all people could talk about was football, but the media tried to knock it down once the buzz passed and its making people forget just what it means to the world and how big the sport it. The fans and people will always know the game is there and has the potential to grow, but until the media start to realise that there is room for football and they need to face up to the fact that its here and its getting bigger, we wont see much major growth as wed like. It’s crucial to have the media change especially if we want to host the 2018 or 2022 world cup.

What’s the supporter culture like in Australia? Is it similar to any supporters in another country, or does it have its own unique style?

Sports are what people in Australia live for. Having said that, the football culture is not like anywhere else is the world. It is still very young and growing. You won’t see as much passion as other nations and due tot strict stadium laws, no musical instruments can be brought it and there are many prohibited things, which limit the atmosphere in the stadium. Our stadiums are big, but crowds are still growing, so the atmosphere is not as big or great as other nations, but its still worth every cent. It’s always growing and moving forward, and I think it’s only a matter of time before the football culture we see in Europe and Africa take over here in Australia.

In general, sports culture is strong. Fans are very passionate for their teams and you often see banter on the fields. Being the opposition is not always the best thing and you may end up hearing things you never want to, but its all the fans passion and emotion. It does have a unique style in that we like to do things more laid back in a sense, but we still have as much passion.

Finally, thoughts and predictions for the upcoming match against Celtic. What do you think the score will be and who do you think will be the Man of the Match for the Roar?

I must admit, I have a soft spot for Celtic, so I think I would be a happy for a draw. Ideally though, it’s best for the Roar and football in this country if the Roar won the game, especially if it were high scoring. Players to watch out for, hard to say, the Roar have many young players who can do a lot on the ball; Man of the Match would probably come from a Celtic player, possibly one of the defenders if they can handle the young pacy Roar players.

Special thanks to Ahmed for taking time to answer some questions. Good to see Celtic trying to expand to new markets, especially with Naka moving on. Good luck to the Roar Sunday and the rest of the season. If you want, Ahmed picked my brain on some Celtic matters for the Roar blog, so check that out here!

Blah, internationals week. As someone who isn’t really into international football, this week is both boring and full of dread. All I really hope is that no Celtic players injure themselves playing for their respected countries and are not to fatigued after long travel and two games with their respective countries. Players like Naka and Scott McDonald have even farther to go than most, so hopefully there will be no drop off. While their is not much football news this week, Celtic’s plans for the summer off season friendly circuit are starting to be released. Celtic have been linked with two “off-season tournaments” this summer, the Peace Cup in Andalucia featuring Real Madrid, Sevilla, Juventus, Lyon, Aston Villa, and Saudi Champions Saudi Al Ittihad and a tournament hosted by Tottenham featuring Spurs, Barcelona, and Al Ahly in North London. Where Celtic goes depends on where they finish in the league. The Peace Cup want the champions of the SPL to attend, so a holiday to sunny Spain is extra incentive for the Bhoys to win the league this year.

Celtic and Man City tied today at Celtic Park 1-1 in Celtic’s last friendly before the start of the regular season. Celtic’s only goal came from Paul McGowan put the biscuit in the basket. McGowan had a chance to put Celtic ahead in the late stages of the game after my player of the game Paul Caddis played a beautiful cross to McGowan who Sebo-ed the ball over the bar. Caddis played a majority of the match on the right wing and looked good doing this. With Naka possibly being out, Caddis should get the starting nod on Sunday on the right wing, leaving Barry Robson and Scott Brown in the middle. While a 1-1 tie against a mid to top level EPL team might be a mixed result for some, not a lot of regulars got a lot of time. With Bobo Balde, Thomas Gravensen, and Derek Riordan not only playing, but starting you know Ginger Baws is just putting 11 bodies out there for a work out. The real star of the match were the new electronic ad boards on the sidelines, which looked sharp. Nothing really else to say besides it is time for real games! YAS!

Celtic get back on the winning track today after a 3-1 defeat of Feyenoord in Rotterdam. Celtic got off to a flying start in the first half scoring three unanswered goals before the forty five minutes were up. Gordon Strachan continued to play mad scientist in the pre-season as he ran out a 4-3-3 of sorts with Aiden McGeady heading up front to join the attack at times against Feyenoord. Whatever he did, it worked in the first half. Georgios Samaras started the scoring for Celtic in the 13th minute after Paul Hartley found him with a nice diagonal pass and the big Greek slotted in home to the low left side. Celtic waited just three minutes to add to their goal account when Lee Naylor played a good cross that found Jan Vennegoor of Hesselinkand his big head and the big Dutchman put the goal away. Vennegoor of Hesselink has been winning a lot more balls in the air and I can recall this being at least his second headed goal of the offseason. In the past, the big Dutchman was not always to most graceful in the air, but these aerial goals are certainly a positive development.

Named the captain for the injuried Stephen McManus, Big Jan got his second goal of the evening in the 40th minute when he slotted the ball into the lower left corner. The highlight of the goal was Aiden McGeady gliding past three defenders and plays a perfect dink pass to Vennegoor of Hesselink. While Celtic may have had their struggles this off-season, both McGeady and Vennegoor of Hesselink have been bright spots so far. The 20 goal scorer and last year’s player of the year have both shined in the pre-season and if can keep to form will be crucial for Celtic this year.

The second half was not as glamorous for Celtic, as it saw their Dutch hosts Feyenoord draw a goal back in the 57th minute when Leroy Fer bent a nice finish past the outstretched Marc Brown. Despite receiving his fair share of criticism, Brown made some spectacular saves after the goal to keep Celtic out front. On a few occasions, Darren O’Dea got beat by his man and forced Brown to make a save. O’Dea has recently lamented his lack of playing time, however if these are the type of performances he is going to put out, he might want to save a seat next to Derek Riordan on the bench.

Overall, it was a good confidence booster for Celtic dominating one of the better team of the Netherlands. With St.Mirren and flag day a week away and a recent string of poor performances, there is a lot for Celtic to put their hat on with this game. Lots of positive attack and the usual bend but not break defensive performance will be uplifting for the Bhoys. Celtic have one more pre-season friendly against a Sven-less Man City next week at Celtic Park and then it is time to put on the big bhoy pants and starts the season.

Celtic really stunk it up tonight in the Netherlands, losing their first game of the Feyenoord Jubilee Tournament against Tottenham 2-0. Spurs saw goals by Bent and Bentley, both somewhat the result of poor defensive play. Celtic did not see much offensive chances either, with only 1 shot by Massimo Donati in the 87th minute. All in all, an ugly scene that could have gotten uglier without some spectacular play by Artur Boruc. Aiden McGeady had another solid game and Scott Brown had a good performance as well, but that might be it. The fullbacks continued to show why they are not up to snuff as both Mark Wilson and Lee Naylor struggled all game (If Martin O’Neill is reading this, then Lee Naylor had a great game, you should definitely buy him!) Paul Hartley was responsible for the first goal when a sloppy back pass was intercepted. Captain Stephen McManus also struggled during the game. Not only was he suspect on the field, McManus was also injured and had to be subbed out of the game. As much as I make jokes, Strachan and company need to make a move for a fullback like Paul Robinson and/or finish the deal with Gabriel Tamas. Whatever he does, he needs to do it quick.
