Every so often, you come across that one story that just sends your heart soaring into the stratisphere, a real moment when you absolutely walk on sunshine and everything’s gonna be alright. Or something to this effect.

A recent article in The Daily Record – Steven Fletcher: Moving to England has made a man of me – now I want to prove it with Scotland.

Now this is the stuff dreams are made.

STEVEN FLETCHER felt like the boy who’d just had his Christmas stolen the day Hibs chairman Rod Petrie refused to sell him to Celtic… Less than a year on he looks back on that crushing disappointment as the decision that finally made a man of him.

Yes, Fletcher has been busy growing up. And he owes it all to Petrie’s stubborn refusal to let him go to Parkhead for a cut-price fee.

But Burnley snatched him up for £3million, and just look at him now!

“I got back to concentrating on my game and scoring goals and maybe it worked out better for me… Burnley must have seen enough to want to take me to the Premiership and you can’t play at a much higher level than that.”

“Since then we’ve been to places like Anfield, Stamford Bridge and White Hart Lane and even though the results haven’t been great the experience has and it’s all helping us adjust to life in the top flight.”

“We’re making progress bit by bit. People were putting pressure on us about our away record but now we’ve gone to a big club like Man City, drawn 3-3 and probably should have won.”

Maybe we should abandon this Celtic sinking ship and become Burnley supporters; they’re made of winners. And they’re in the Premier League.

In talking about Itallian-born/Ireland boss Johnny Trapattoni, “He tells me I have the ability to score and take a shot, because if I take a shot and even if I don’t score, it might take a deflection and it might drop into someone else’s path… The manager is very good that way, he always gives you advice and the way he gets his point across, he makes sure you listen.” And later in the interview – “Thankfully the manager was good enough to put me in for that game.”

All this while away from his main squeeze Celtic, “For me this is a nice change from the situation back home. We have been taking a bit of stick at Celtic … We’re looking forward to the game and it’s good to be away from Glasgow.”

The winger has yet to score in his 28 previous caps.

The King of Kings, Henrik Larsson, has recently announced that he would be very interested in a coaching role with Celtic. Larsson, who scored 242 goals during his time with Celtic, is widely expected to retire at the end of the Swedish League’s season which ends in November and if Sweden’s bid to enter the World Cup is thwarted, as it could be by the end of today. If this is the case, Larsson has made no secret that he would like to return to Celtic as a coach in some capacity. Henke said “I talk a lot with Celtic, although nothing is happening at the moment. Everyone knows what my feelings are for the club. I will go to Scotland sooner or later.” He has previously been rumored to return to Scotland to gain his coaching qualifications, since the Scottish Football Association allowing senior professionals with at least years’ experience able to skip the introductory stages and begin with the Uefa B licence. The SFA have said that Larsson has yet to do that though. Larsson all but confirmed his leaving of Sweden after his playing days are done by saying, “If I should become a coach, my ambition is to be the best I can be. That means I will have to leave Sweden. I have gained a lot of experience over the years and I feel I’m on the right track to become a coach, but studying in the Swedish FA system doesn’t interest me. Why should I learn everything from training boys to treating injuries? I would much rather get down to studying real coaching methods.” It seems the Scottish Coach training system and Henke’s hero status means that a return to Celtic could be very likely! Truth be told, I would take Larsson back as a player these days as well.

Of course, any mention of the King of Kings gives me a great excuse to put this video up. Ah, memories.

So, if Sunday’s result was not bad enough for Celtic, apparently a couple of injuries have decided to make themselves apparent either immediately before the match Sunday or as a result of the game. Of course, Marc-Antoine Fortune remains side lined with a knee injury, with no time-table set for his return as of now. Barry Robson was also not fit enough to take place in a match that he has done well in before. In the lead up to the match, new left back Danny Fox was unable to perform on Sunday after injuring his hamstring. Later it was learned that Fox had a tear in his hamstring, meaning a possible long term return of Lee Naylor. Fox’s fullback partner, Andreas Hinkel was also not fit on Sunday and Mark Wilson had to replace him. Shaun Maloney picked up an injury to his Achilles during the match to keep him from traveling to Japan with the Scottish National Team. Stephen McManus might also be ruled out of the trip for the Tartan Army to the Far East after picking up stitches after Rangers elbows met his head, yet went un-noticed by Craig Thomson. And of course, Scott Brown continues to struggle with his ankle, making Celtic supporters wonder if his ankle is causing the bad passing or if he has sprained his brain.

Speaking of Craig Thomson, the referee from Sunday’s loss has admitted that he missed the first penalty claim for Celtic and Shaun Maloney in the first half where David Weir’s tackle attempt got none of the ball and all of Maloney’s leg. Speaking through Head of Referees, Hugh Dallas (prick), Thomson was very sorry for his error and promised to do better in the future. As the title says, “Greeeeeeeeeeat.”

If you are like me, you are a Celtic message board junkie. The Huddleboard, CelticMinded, DeadRaibead, TalkCeltic, Kerrydale Street, etc, I am guessing that a majority of you are a member of one of the above you have been hearing about the mythical Paddy McCourt goal from yesterday’s 4-0 victory over Falkirk in the CIS Cup. Various corners of the Tim-nernet have been hyping to goal up to be Pele/Maradona worthy (don’t want to start THAT debate), but since the game was no on TV, Channel 67, or less *ahem* legal ways of online vewing, only the people that saw it live know of it’s glory. Sure, some Celtic fans who were in Falkirk tried to provide some illustrated explanations of the goal. While it was appreciated, and rather humorous, it still didn’t give us all a great idea of the goal. Well now, I have some footage finally of the magical goal.

Apparently, this video missed him beating three defenders in the midfield as well. Still, that was some run!

The thing that came on the mind of most Celtic supporters when Rapid Vienna was assigned to the same Europa League group was “revenge.” Even most supporters who were not born in 1984, know the story of the Cup Winner Cup match against Rapid and wanted some swift and harsh revenge for the Vienna’s antics and subsequent replay at Old Trafford. If you don’t know the story, the quick version is Celtic and Rapid met in a European Cup Winner’s Cup tie in 1984 where Celtic got a lost 3-1 in Vienna, but won 3-0 in the match at Parkhead, however a Rapid Vienna player feigned an injury by pretending to be hit with a bottle thrown from the stand. UEFA replayed the match at Old Trafford where Rapid Vienna won 1-0. Celtic supporters in Manchester were so mad at the acting, cheating Austrians that some came onto the pitch and attacked the Rapid players, with one fan connecting a square kick to one Rapid Vienna player’s… *ahem* “marbles” or “change purse” or whatever you want to call that area. Needless to say, many Celtic fans still froth with anger when the name Rapid Vienna is mentioned. Not content in pissing Celtic fans off enough by their presence, Rapid now want Celtic fans to think they are seeing the 1984 Rapid Vienna team, since the Austrians will wear the red colored kits to commemorate the notorious 1984 European Cup-Winners’ Cup tie between the sides. Rapid spokesman Sharif Shoukry said: “We wanted to keep this secret, but yes, we are definitely going to play in red. Our away strip for the Austrian league already shows red and blue but for the Europa League and the special game in Glasgow, one of the reasons we chose red was to remember 1984. It has helped us once and so why shouldn’t it help us again? We have a sense of humour and certainly don’t want this to be viewed badly in Scotland. We had other options knocked back by Uefa so we thought it would be good to wear the all-red strip for the first time since the game in Manchester – but it’s not aimed at upsetting Celtic.” Somehow, I don’t think Celtic fans will see the humor.

In less angered inducing and more current news, for today’s match against Falkirk in the CIS cup, it seems Tony Mowbray has decided to find a middle ground about my question yesterday whether or not the CIS Cup mattered. Georgios Samaras is still recovering from going into the bench in the Hapoel Tel-Aviv game, so Chris Killen and Scott McDonald are likely to be paired up again today in the striker position. It is also believed that ToMo will rest some starters like Scott Brown, Shaun Maloney, and Andreas Hinkel, meaning possible starts for Paddy McCourt, Niall McGinn, and Paul Caddis.

The 29-year-old, who can play in defence and midfield, left English League One outfit Charlton Athletic when his contract expired in June. Tony Mowbray is hoping that a deal will be in place and Zhi will be available for the next match, at home against Dundee United on September 12th. Mowbray said of Zhi, “I’m delighted that he may join us. He will significantly add to the squad. Zheng Zhi is a player I have tracked for some time.” In his final season, the Chinese international scored nine goals in the Colaship. Mowbray will be hoping Zheng will provide cover following Mowbray’s decision to allow Darren O’Dea to join Reading on loan and Massimo Donati to move to Bari.

Meanwhile Artur Boruc has remarked that he would enjoy nothing more than to finish his career at Celtic Park and has declared his love for Celtic. After a tumultuous season last year, Boruc has seen a return to form in the beginning of this season so far, after there were doubts if he would even earn the starting job when his friend and Polish teammate Lukasz Zaluksa from Dundee United. Bourc said, I’ve indicated I might want to try my luck in the English Premier League or somewhere else. But I have spent four fun years at Celtic. I love the club and if I play in Glasgow until the end of my career I won’t complain. This campaign has begun really well and I want to maintain that until the end. There are still a few good years of football left in me and I want to focus and make the most of it. I will concentrate in every match to ensure the mistakes of last season are not repeated. I worked hard at training last year but mentally I might have been somewhere else. This season I’ve decided to deal with all of that and I’m sorting out my life.” Don’t tease us like that, Artur!

Man, international weeks are BORING.

As the transfer deadline closed, Celtic saw one player come in and another player go on loan. Celtic brought in Zheng Zhi, who was previously unsigned after playing with Charlton the year before. The Chinese midfielder is the Captain of the Chinese National Team. He left Charlton after turning down the offer of a new contract with the Addicks after they were relegated. Since the Chinese internationalist is without a club, the Hoops are under no pressure to get the paperwork pushed through. He will arrive at Celtic Park once the necessary work permits are completed and approved. Zheng went to Charlton in 2006, when he played 12 games on loan for the club in the Premier League. He then scored nine goals in Charlton’s first campaign in the Championship in 2007 and finished as runner-up to Matt Holland in the player of the year poll. He also represented China in the Olympics, but returned to Charlton with a groin problem and only appeared in 11 games during Charlton’s eventual relegation to League One.

Defender Darren O’Dea has signed a new three-year deal with Celtic but joined Reading on loan until January. O’Dea has been starting and/or the first sub used recently with captain Stephen McManus injured. However, with McManus coming back from injury, O’Dea was loaned out to give him a chance to see first team action until January. However, the three year extension shows that O’Dea is very much a part of the future plans of Celtic. Also going out on loan is back up goal keeper Mark Brown to Kilmarnock. Brown has become the 4th choice keeper at Celtic after the acquisition of Lukasz Zaluska and Dominic Cervi to back up Artur Boruc.

Finally, Celtic have drawn Falkirk for their first round of the CIS Co-Op Cup. Celtic are the holders of the cup after defeating Rangers last year in extra time, 2-0.

Both Chris Killen and Darren O’Dea have had their names linked with possible moves from Celtic today. Chris Killen could be on his way out of Celtic on loan, if Tony Mowbray can sign another striker before the transfer window closes tomorrow. Killen would most likely be heading to a English Championship club, with Coventry and Bristol City’s names coming up frequently. Meanwhile, Darren O’Dea has also been rumored to be going on loan to the Colaship or even the EPL, with both Roy Keane and Ipswich and Wolves vying for the services of the young Irish center back. Tony Mowbray has commented that both Chris Killen and Darren O’Dea have futures with Celtic, which is why these moves could possibly be only loan moves. It also seems that Aiden McGeady, Scott Brown, and Scott McDonald also have long term futures with Celtic, despite being linked with EPL clubs such as Spurs, Everton, and Wigan. On Sunday, Tony Mowbray told the media that they should not pay much mind to the rumors that surround the trio of players, making most believe that the three will remain at Celtic past tomorrow’s transfer deadline.

UPDATE: Darren O’Dea has been loaned to Colaship side Reading. However, O’Dea has also signed a three year extension with Celtic to remain with the club until 2012. It seems Celtic have the option of calling O’Dea back in January, so maybe Tony Mowbray will be using the Stephen McManus, Gary Caldwell, and Glenn Loovens, but maybe trying to raise the value of one of those three (aka McManus) and sell them like he did with Massimo Donati. Or maybe we’re trying to get a signing in before the deadline in an hour and a half. We shall see.

UPDATE #2: Backup of the Backup of the Backup keeper Mark Brown is off to Kilmarnock on loan for the season after Hibs dropped their interest in the keeper.

UPDATE #3: Chiense midfielder Zheng Zhi will likely sign after taking a physical. Zhi is a member of the Chinese national team and was at Charlton, but his contract ended.
