By: Matt | August 26th, 2009
Celtic have confirmed they are in talks with representatives of Korean midfielder Ki Sung-Yong. There is much speculation that one part of the South Korean National Team’s “Double Dragon” will be a guest of the club’s at Celtic’s 2nd leg of the Champions League playoffs today. However, Peter Lawwell spoke that while the two parties are meeting and negotiating, it is unlikely a deal would be finished in the current transfer window. His current club, K-League leaders Seoul had revealed that the Glasgow club were pursuing South Korean international Ki. His present club’s general manager, Kang Myong-won, told Sports Seoul: “Celtic have informed us of their intentions about Ki Sung-Yong. We understand that the player may want to move, but this is not a good time for us to sell.” Korean TV is reporting that Ki will join Celtic in January though.
Ki began his career at John Paul College in Brisbane, Australia, and returned to South Korea to sign for Seoul FC in 2006. He and fellow Seoul prospect Lee Chung-Young are affectionately known as “Ssang Yong (Double Dragon)” because of their emergence at the club. As word got out of Celtic’s interest in Ki, his wikipedia page became home to some interesting facts about Ki. As in, did you know he is the biggest The Wolfe Tones fan in Asia, has the largest Charlie and the Bhoys CD collection in South Korea, and has long been an admirer of Jinky Johnstone? Neither did I! Wikipedia is quite the place.
