Celtic Pair Among Finalists for Player of the Year
By: Matt | April 15th, 2009
Celtic will have two nominees looking to take home the Scottish PFA Player of the Year award. Scott Brown and Gary Caldwell are the Celtic representatives for the award, with the other two candidates, Pedro Mendes and Steven Davis, coming from Rangers. Hamilton duo James McCarthy and James McArthur are on the list for the Young Player award, with Hearts winger Andrew Driver and Hibernian striker Steven Fletcher also in contention. I think it is very interesting and telling that the Glasgow giants make up race for Player of the Year, while the two clubs from Edinburgh are heavily represented in the Young Player of the Year race.

I am also a bit surprised Crosas didn’t at least get nominated for Young Player of the Year.

Brown and McCarthy are winners.
I just dont think Crosas played enough games to be nominated. Which we can all blame on Strachan, thank god. lol

I just don’t get the Brown nomination. He lacks basics but I still would have him in my team every time for what he has in his locker.
But, compare him to Aiden last season. In no way has he been that outstanding. In fact I would say Caldwell has been far, far better.
Young player. Couldnae gie a shit.

I disagree Kev. I think Aiden and Brown bring different things to the table. Aiden is obviously a scoring threat every time he has the ball, either setting someone up or scoring himself. Brown has that ability (not as deadly as Aiden, obviously) as well, but can stop counter attacks and play the important first ball to Aiden or Naka to start our attacks. A Scott Brown on his game is necessary to Celtic success. I just hope we don’t see how true that is the next three games…
Caldwell’s nomination screams at me “Hey, I was shit last year, but this year I’m a serviceable to good defender”. Brown is a bit like that, but without him we can’t win, where as we showed last year that we can win the league with two shit Centerbacks.
Think the four nominations show what this league is all about though, a Hun bias and gritty defensively skilled players.

A Scott Brown on his game is necessary to Celtic success That’s probably true, I reckon it will be proved not to be the case though.
I understand why Brown is rated maybe I just don’t see how good he is yet.
Absense makes the heart grow fonder and I’m now missing Barry Robson like I would miss a left leg. Never thought I would say that.

Hopefully Robson will be back by the trip across town.
