Japanese Starlet Set for Celtic

By: JT | January 9th, 2008

Following in the immense footsteps of SPL Player of the Year Shunsuke Nakamura, speedy young midfielder Koki Mizuno is set to join Celtic after having his work permit approved by an advisory panel of the Department of Employment.

The 22 year-old Mizuno only has four caps at the international level, so Celtic’s assumption that the work permit would be granted due to his immense potential and likely place on future Japanese national teams was proven correct.

Terms of his move from J-League side JEF United have not been made public.

Obviously Naka has had quite an impact at Celtic, so let’s see what the youngster can do before we start labeling him as the “new” something or other.

Word on the street is that he combines the ball skills of Naka with the pace and quickness of Aiden McGeady. If that’s even close to true, imagine the possibilities! A midfield trio with the workrate, class, guile, and speed of McGeady, Scott Brown, and Mizuno. That would be something to see.

FIXTURES RESCHEDULED

Celtic’s two matches that were postponed after the death of former Celt Phil O’Donnell have been rescheduled.

The Bhoys will host the Huns in the Glasgow derby on Wednesday 23 January provided neither of the clubs are involved in a Scottish Cup replay.

The Celts will make an emotional trip to Fir Park to meet up with O’Donnell’s club Motherwell on 30 January.

Both matches are at 1945 local time, 1445 est for me.

Here’s some of the Great Mizuno to get your afternoon going right. Its a bit lengthy and the music is ear-splitting, so I’ll help you out. Check out his moves with the ball against the US at 0:40, the ridiculous freekicks at 2:20 and 2:35, the rocket he launches with his “weaker” left foot at 4:48, and the grand finale at 7:38. Words won’t suffice for that one!

Word is that the Bhoys are also taking a good look at Brad Guzan, US keeper with Chivas USA.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Mizuno decision is precedent setting, because if Guzan moves to the Celts he won’t meet the criteria for a work permit. Still quite a few clubs in the frame for him though.

I have to wonder whether this transfer would have gone through to a non-Old Firm side in Scotland. With the amount of trouble Caley Thistle had getting Niculae, who has an actual international career (as opposed to four caps), I somehow doubt it.

Maybe a positive dividend of Dr. Death? Nope, still not worth it. Get him to fuck!
