Mowbray Surprisingly Interested in a West Brom Linked Defender

By: Matt | July 28th, 2009

Tony Mowbray made public that Celtic are interested in the young defender Josh Thompson. Unsurprisingly, Thompson would be coming from West Brom. While he doesn’t come from West Brom proper, Mowbray invited Thompson, the Stockport County defender, to West Brom for a week’s trial last season but would now like to bring him to Celtic. Thompson has been on trial at Manchester United, but he is attracting interest from Sir Alex Ferguson’s son Darren, the Peterborough manager, who would like to bring him there as well. Mowbray said of Thompson “I know all about him. He’s a very young player, 17 or 18, but he is nowhere near our first team. He’s a talented boy. Are we buying him? You should ask someone else. I don’t know where negotiations are at.” So it doesn’t seem like he’d be an immediate replacement for Stephen McManus, but another “one for the future”. However, Thompson seems like a coveted prospect and a decent buy for Celtic in the future. Hopefully they can lock the young man up.

Update! Celtic’s bid for Thompson has been accepted by Stockport!

    Hail! Hail!

Despite my dissappointment at the recent defeat, I am very excited about TM’s approach.

He is doing exactly what I wanted: he’s luring young talent with EPL quality training facilities and European prospects while presenting a stage by which these players can take the “next step”.

Since TM has arrived, we’ve aquired:
    1. MAF – even if he ripens to no more than VoH, he is faster, more mobile and only 28. Although Id’ve liked him to finish the other night, it seems he remains involved throughout his shift and won’t drift out from limited service.

    2. Landry N’Guemo – appears a player. Dynamic, aggressive, gets stuck-in, passes forward. Sure, to this point he can give the ball away sometimes, but his ability to be a ball winner will neutralize some of that…and he’s 24

    3. Danny Fox – Having seen him on four occassions last season, he will be the first name on the team sheet – week-in-week-out, for no other reason than Naylor is his primary competition. He has a “cultured left foot” – err – he can deliver good crosses and dead ball service and he’s only 23.

If they nail down this Thompson, aged 18, Celtic will have a crop of young talent to develope and build on.

I believe only Barry Robson is over thirty. As the season developes, we can target a veteran for a Euro push or a title run in.

    Hail! Hail!
    Up with Mowbray!
