Rumors and Return of the Bumblebee?
By: Matt | May 19th, 2009
So, I got my problems with the club off of my chest. I suggested changes and so new directions. Well, there are already rumors starting about changes. Some believable, some not so much.
The first is that Celtic are going to make an attempt to sign Michael Owen this summer. Excuse me while I laugh uncontrollably. Lawwell has said that this is not true, but the story has not lost steam yet. Even if Celtic are going to make an attempt, Owen seems like the oft injured, over-priced and over-rated player that Celtic don’t need now.
Next on the docket of rumors is that Celtic are looking to get Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic on loan. Apparently Krkic is looking for more first time playing time, falling behind Messi, Henry, and Eto’o on the striker pecking order at the Nou Camp. Celtic are apparently trying to get a similar deal with Krkic as they did with Barca academy product Marc Crosas.
For a few years now, Celtic has been slim in the leftback position, but has gone unaddressed. Red Bull Salzburg leftback Ronald Gercaliu believes that he could be the answer to these problems and has expressed his interest in joining Celtic.
With Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink struggling with form and injuries and Georgios Samaras being hot and cold all year, Celtic might need to strengthen their strikers this summer. They have apparently eyed Swindon Town’s Simon Cox and have put a 1.2 million quid bid in for the striker. However, Swindon Town have told Celtic that they will need to double this bid if they want Cox’s services.
Finally, in a bit of exciting news, there have been some strong suggestions that Celtic will be bringing back the famous bumble bee top as the away kit next year. The bumble bee is one of the most infamous away tops in both Celtic history.

Hail! Hail!
Welcome back!
I actually addressed this issue in a previous post.
I think the aquisition of talented players via loaning is exactly the direction Celtic should go.
Peter Lawell’s interest in maintaining Celtic’s sound financial footing runs counter to the supporters’ desire to aquire the quality necessary to win the Champions League.
Although Celtic cannot compete for the signatures of, say Kaka’, they could offer the future stars of UEFA competitions an opportunity to cut their teeth.
Piss on Michael Own. But, a resounding YES! to Krkic. He is exactly the type of player Celtic should be seeking to attract:
1. Young
2. Talented
3. On the cusp of Superstardom…but not their yet
4. On the books of someone else…half price loanee
5. Too good for reserves, but too far down the depth chartCeltic should reconfugure themselves to accentuate Lennextown, UEFA Champions League, Media Scrutiny, Extensive travel and that ferocious (err,?) derby by offering 1st team football to major clubs’ excess talent.
Barcelona, et al, should be delighted that Bojan Krkic continue his development at a facitlity the quality of Lennoxtown. They should love the chance to see the next in their procession perform in Champions League matches and a significant derby.
For Celtic, it is the financially prudent move. We “split” wages and get younger and more telented…not to mention the benefit of having continental talent in house with domestic talent.
Stop trying to sign “Lee Naylor” and instead seek to aquire, through loan, Kieran Gibbs, for example. He was loaned last season to Norwich. He only appeared in twenty matches in all comps this season. Wenger thinks he is the next England left-back, but he is not first on the depth chart. Scotland is close enough for Arsenal to monitor. The STYLE of the SPL is similar to the EPL and Gibbs should get three times the matches here than their.

P.S.
I dig the new “Bumble Bee” kit, just because it is the “Bumble Bee” kit. I will buy it, should this come to pass – but iit is nothing special.
I DON’T have flittering images of Paulo, Jorge and Pierre on the trot in me ‘ed.

Ryan-I would love to see Krkic at Celtic, but I don’t think it is realistic. He is pushing Eto’o out of the line up and I expect him to get more first team time in Barca next year. We get along with Barca it seems, but not that well! It seems like quite the coincidence that the Owen and Krkic rumors both came as the last week of season ticket renewals was coming up.
I think we have some good talent in the youth and reserve system in the likes of Paul Caddis, Cillian Sheridan, and Darren O’Dea, but once again the problem falls on the shoulders of the wee ginger in the track suit. Instead of playing these seemingly ready young talent, Strachan goes with the likes of Paul Hartley and others who are past it while loaning the talent out to others in the league.

Seattlebhoy: seconded. another horrible away top for the unsuspecting consumer to purchase.
All rumours are moonbeams. The truth lies at Motherwell, Hibs and Dundee Utd.

I guess I am not targeting Krkic specifically, but a new way of aquiring talent and assembling a team.
lordofthewing brought up two good points:
1. Value for money
2. scoutingAll i’m saying is 1967 will never happen again. Not because Celtic lack vision, but because finance and the Bosman ruling preclude our outfit from building that kind of squad again.
Celtic, and the supporters need to be realistic.
Can we compete in Europe?
Yes, but it is probably not realistic to win Champions League. However, Europa Cup is a serious goal. We have the finance of Werder or Shahktar and should be able to assemble a roster of similar age and talent – even if it is only for three seasons at a time. Can we win the SPL?
Yes, even with this muddled mess of a roster. I agree with Matt…McCourt, Caddis, O’dea, Sheridan, Ferry, Mizuno, et al should be our depth on the first team roster. They should be our 70th minute subs. They are quality enough to win this league and hungry enough to compete week in and week out. As well, if one showcases themsleves enough to move south – cudos to the Celtic Development system. Can we win hardware each year?
Yes and we should. However, following an ethos that is a CELTIC ethos. This may be possession type, slow-build-up football or it may be Tommy Burns (RIP) stylee. But it needs to be a Celtic developed ethos, not “Peter Lawell and said accountants” ethos. The signs are there for this:
1. the talent loaned out
2. the reputation of Lennoxtown
3. the potential of some players coming in
4. the financial stability of the organizationAll that should be focused on aquiring affordable, quality talent under the pretense of development, rather than being the last bastion for the dying swans of the SPL

I just feel with the vast desparity in income between Scotland and the major leagues on the planet , our selling points intrigue clubs rather than particular players. It is in the best interest of all parties that top flight talent from A+ clubs in A leagues be blooded at our club – which is an A club in a B- league.
