Samaras & Mizuno In, Lafferty Out
By: JT | January 29th, 2008
Celtic have brought out-of-favor Manchester City striker Georgios Samaras to Parkhead in a loan move, with the Bhoys having the option of making the deal permanent.
The 6′4″ Greek international is looking to regain a place on his country’s roster ahead of the defense of their improbable Euro 2004 title later this summer in Switzerland and Austria.
When I first saw Samaras at Man City, I thought he looked the part, and would eventually become an important member of their first team squad.
But as time went by, he appeared lost on pitch, and void of confidence. That hasn’t changed much as he’s been relegated to fringe status on the Citizens’ squad. His final numbers at Man City are 55 appearances and 8 goals.
Now when he came to England, his price tag was £6m and he was coming off of scoring a highly respectable 29 goals in 88 matches with Dutch club Heerenveen. That kind of success obviously failed to be replicated in England, and a move to a level more commensurate with his current ability has taken place.
Its still unclear what this deal means for Kyle Lafferty. The big Burnley striker has impressed while playing for Northern Ireland, but not so much for his club. Despite this, Celtic are alleged to have offered £2.5m plus Derek Riordan.
That seems like quite a price to pay for a player who has scored eight times in seventy matches for a Championship club. Top that with the fact that he’s an admitted Rangers die-hard, and you have a striker that supporters won’t be too enthused to see in green-and-white.
The move for Samaras, who was also a target for the Huns, probably keeps Lafferty in the Championship, though Burnley remain optimistic that Celtic will return with an enhanced bid.
The way that Celtic’s front men have played this season, its was clear that help needed to arrive quickly.
While I’m not particularly enamored with either player, for the moment Samaras offers the better upside. He’s free, he’s played in a top league and has international experience. Like new Bhoy Andreas Hinkel, he’s hungry to regain a spot on his national team, which is usually a recipe for success. A change of scenery might just be the tonic that he needs to jump start his career again. And he’s only 22.
Koki Mizuno is officially a Celtic player. It’s been a near-certainty for a few weeks now and the deal is finally complete.
The 22-year old midfielder has been described as having the ball skills of countryman Shunsuke Nakamura and the pace/elusiveness of Aiden McGeady. He might take a while to adjust to Scottish football, but in time Celtic expect him to become a major contributor in all competitions.
My what a cosmopolitan squad Celtic have become. Samaras is the first Greek to pull on the Hoops, and another Japanese Bhoy is on the way. Times have changed quite a bit since the days when all of Celtic’s first team squad were from within 30 miles of Parkhead, haven’t they?
If anything new transpires over the course of the day, I’ll update here…

Don’t think Lafferty is worth 3 million - just more english over estimation of players worth. More money than sense.
Celtic will probably go for Robson now for £1.25 million and maybe one last defender and that will close our dealings.
And whats the state of affairs at rangers?? Cousins out, Hutton Out, Carroll out!! So whose coming in??? No one! Gers have till the weekend to pull their fingers out otherwise their fans will call for blood.Posted from

You’ve been spammed cleverly (see first comment) … Samaras looks like a good move. I’m a big fan of the out-of-favor internationals, especially after Marius Niculae’s last few months at Caley Thistle.

I think the new striker could be exactly what we need. Hopefully the team comes together quickly and we can re-take a league lead. Though I’d be happy if we stopped eking out 1-0 victories over teams we should be putting the screws to.

Matt, I’m with you, although I just read that Tommy Burns said Celtic may be in for Lafferty again in the summer if it doesn’t happen by Thursday. I’ll post more later.
Andy, you’re right that the price for Lafferty is excessive, but if Celtic are willing to pay, then Burnley should try to cash in as much as possible.
Its certainly possible that they’ll go for Robson, but I don’t know how much sense that makes for the player himself, save maybe his wallet.
Yeah, Rangers supporters will be going nuts if they lose three players, taking in over 11m and bring no one in as replacements. It’s going to be great.
John, I think a skilled target man like Samaras could blend in quickly. Hopefully he’ll get a run out tomorrow against ‘Well.

Thanks for the tip Ian, I thought the dude was just a Celtic fan, then I checked out his garbage site and made the same determination you did!

I spammed? How?
Signing Lafferty would just show the divide between the board room and the fans. Why sign a life long hun fan and know loyalist? It would be one thing if he were some world beater, but he’s not that good even. I don’t Lafferty replica kits would fly off the shelves either…

Matt, the spam which was the first comment has been deleted, and your comment moved up to first after that.
Lafferty kits might fly off the shelves, perhaps as fodder for a large bonfire.

I think Mizuno may not be known comparing to Samaras. Mizuno is not Nakamura-type at all, he is more like McGeady.
I’m not sure Mizuno could gain popularity and attention that Nakamura has got. However, for the team like Celtic who has some powerful target men, he will be needed sooner or later.

Thanks Ken. Its good to get some commentary from someone who has actually seen Mizuno play, rather than the papers which recycle the same info over and over.
