Celtic v Arsenal Preview

By: Matt | August 17th, 2009

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is an injury doubt for the Gunners along with fellow midfielder Denilson and defender Bacary Sagna. Theo Walcott and Johan Djourou will miss the match for sure with injury, though Abou Diaby will be available for Arsenal. Walcott, Djourou, and Diaby were all missing from the Gunners 6-1 demolishing of Everton on the weekend that saw Denilson, Vermaelen, Galla, Fabregas twice, Eduardo all score. Hopefully they used up all their goals on the weekend.

For Celtic, Glenn Loovens is questionable after picking up an injury over the weekend in Celtic’s opening week defeat of Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Loovens only lasted one half before being substituted in the Bhoys 3-1 victory. Shaun Maloney also picked up an injury towards the end of that match that forced Celtic to close the match out with only 10 men. Maloney is also questionable for Tuesday. Tony Mowbray said that Maloney meerly picked up a cramp on Saturday, but there are reports that it might cause the winger to miss the match.

Defender Stephen McManus continues to sit out for Celtic while recovering from off-season knee surgery. Gary Caldwell will make a return to the Celtic defense after missing the Scottish Premier League opener against the Dons through suspension. Caldwell will pair up with either Glenn Loovens or Darren O’Dea, depending on the health of Loovens, though O’Dea has shown he is a capable understudy so far.

If Maloney is unable to start, the only difference I would expect to see in the line up from Saturday would be Scott Brown initially starting on the opposite wing of Aiden McGeady, though Brown would be given free reign to attack and float all over the field. Scott McDonald and Marc Antoine Fortune are likely to be the starting strikers, while Massimo Donati and Landry N’Guemo will be the other midfielders. The center backs will be determined by the health of Big Glenn, but Andreas Hinkel and Danny Fox are definitely the starting full backs. There has been loud speculation that Hinkel will be sold, though he came out today saying that he loves Celtic and wants to remain at the club, but Tony Mowbray has come out and said that there will be no sales before Tuesday’s fixture. I think Celtic will come out attacking and get an early goal. Arsenal will then be out for blood and pepper the Celtic goal, but the Bhoys will bend but not break and take a 1-0 lead to North London. Keep the Faith!

Who do you think should start? What do you think the result will be? Let me know in the comments!

I’d be interested in seeing that 3-5-2 that we used against Man City, though maybe tomorrow’s not the time to experiment! LOL! Donati seemed to do well as a center half in that game, and if Maloney is healthy, it might be a good idea to have Maloney and Brown in there to try and get a goal. It’d look something like this.
    Boruc
    Hinkel Caldwell Fox
    Donati
    N’Guemo
    Maloney McGeady
    Brown
    McDonald Fortune

Would certainly throw Arsenal for a loop and could create some chances. Donati was able to stop Tevez, Bellamy, and Adebayor, so I think he could do it against Arsenal as well.

Seattle-Like you said, perhaps not the best time to experiment…That’s an interesting thought, just maybe one better tested out against St Johnstone and not Arsenal, haha.

Sorry but there’s only one winner. Celtic are a championhip team down south of the border. Comfortable for arsenal, winning both legs

Alex-Very true Arsenal has been to other tough atmosphere’s, but Celtic have also held (no offense) better teams to nothing. Man Yoo left with nothing, the year AC Milan won the Champions League they left Parkhead goalless, Juventus, Liverpool, and Barcelona have all seen defeat at Celtic Park. There might be something to this whole Parkhead mystique. Should be entertaining, either way.

Said nothing about tomorrow’s result, just think the “Championship” comparison is a bit incorrect. What is Mickey Mouse league about Man U, Liverpool, Juventus, AC Milan, Villareal, Benfica? Maybe I don’t see it because that gold star above our crest was distracting me.

42 years ago yes but come on you’ve gotta admit on paper there’s only one winner although was arsenal to get knocked out, there’s no team I’d sooner knock us out than Celtic to be honest

Of course Arsenal are the favorite, but all those other teams were the favorite as well. That’s why they play the game. It is stupid that either Arsenal or Celtic will be out of the Champions League and the Champions of Cyprus will be in. Seems like a flawed system to me. Either way, should be a fun match tomorrow.

matt – i agree with u on that point… facts OBVIOUSLY DONT lie… you lot do have a good record up there
but for some reason i get a feeling celtic are going to dominate then arsenal are jus going to hit u lot without u lot knowing
but hey may the best team win tomorrow night….
but if it is true about Fabregas.. Denilson AND sagna r Injuried then it will be a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT game… TRUST ME!

Gra-Go down the Gallowgate. Pubs like Bairds, Pub 67, and Saracen Head will be filled with Celtic supporters, though you might not want to be the loudest Arsenal supporter in those.

Celtic’s history is clouding te minds of even the pundits. i just saw a bookmaker even giving an odd of arsenal not to score. Against Celtic? seriously the whole “battle of brits” is getting out of hand. arsenal is a top club despite its greedy and selfish board and they will blow celtic away with their negatice football.

It was like men against boys out there tonight… fair enough they got 2 flukey goals, but we got well beat… You can’t win if you don’t get the shots in.

Fucked in the next leg too I think.

    Although who knows…

My 3-0 to the Hoops at The Emirates prediction could still come true.

    Keep the faith!
