Will the Mad Scientist make more changes?
By: Matt | March 3rd, 2009
As Celtic come off perhaps their best match of the season, most of the managers in training on the tim-ernet are of the feeling that our best squad was probably out there last weekend. Celtic take a rare midweek trip up to Rugby Park to take on Killie for a Wednesday league match. The mad ginger scientist has seemed to have found a combination that works for Celtic in the midfield, I am think that if he decides to alter it then the towns people might be at his door with pitchforks and torches. Seven goals created by the midfield would make most managers take notice and not want to mess with that line up, but Gordon Strachan is not most managers. However, to his credit when he was forced to play Barry Robson and Paul Hartley together due to injury last year and the pairing was successful, Ginger Baws kept with the pairing that was probably the key to Celtic’s comeback to win the league last year. So will we see the Naka, Crosas, Brown, McGeady midfield tomorrow? Hopefully yes, but if it was a sure thing then what would I write about?
One player that won’t be in the starting line up for Celtic definitely is striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. The big Dutchman picked up a yellow last Saturday, meaning he will have to sit out this midweek tie against Kilmarnock. It might be for the best however, as big Jan had a pretty miserable game last weekend, missing a penalty and generally being useless the entire game. Hopefully Georgios Samaras can get back on track Wedensday and return to the fast paced goal scoring he had in the beginning of the season.
Perhaps making Gordon Strachan’s midfield choices easier will be the fact that many of the midfield corps usually available will still be unfit for this match. Barry Robson, Shaun Maloney, and Koki Mizuno, along with leftback Lee Naylor will not be fit for the match Wednesday.
Usually, Gordon Strachan has shown that in the past when he falls ass backwards into successful tactics, like he has now, he usually does not mess with those tactics and expect Wednesday to be the same. A similar squad as last Saturday, with an identical midfield, filled with confidence after last weekend’s touchdown of goals, runs Kilmarnock all around Rugby Park to the tune of around 3-0.
